It feels like I can't go more than two days without arguing with someone over Kimbo Slice's value in MMA. Whether it's with a diehard fan, a blogger or a casual sports fan, it always seems like someone wants to talk Kimbo and, more specifically, dismiss his importance to the sport.
Well, hopefully all that talk can officially end today because ESPN.com released it's most searched items for the month of June. "(NCAA) College baseball" and the "College World Series" topped the list followed by "TitleTown" (a new SportsCenter feature), "Euro 2008"...blah, blah, blah.
Oh, look there's our old friend Kimbo sitting pretty at #11. You've heard of him, right? He's the guy who's defecating on the purity of the sport.
Bollocks.

The only thing that kimbo has done for this sport is give it a black eye. Just yesterday my Uncle who just recently started watching the free events and unleashed. He was even asking whats up with that kimbo guy i thought he was supposed to be a bad ass.Even he thought the fight should of been stopped in the 2nd and that they gave kimbo the fight when they stopped it to save face.I dont have anything against kimbo but he is'nt and nor dose he deserve to be at the level that the shaws have put him at. The only list kimbo deserves to be on the the over-hyped list thanks to the shaws.

Brittany Spears, Backstreet Boys and N-Sync are were like Kimbo, they didn't have longevity and Kimbo won't either, unless Shaw keeps feeding him easy fights. After this fight with Rogers giive him Sergi, so Kimbo can be retired

"Stop worrying about if he can apply a proper kimura or not; that's really not the point. Shaquille O'Neal can't shoot like Ray Allen and, in turn, Allen can't post up like O'Neal. In other words, there are different ways to win in sports. As long as Kimbo continues to win, he deserves all the accolades he is receiving."
This is a terrible argument/comparision. Shaquille O'neal may not be a distance shooter, but he still posts up and competes against REAL TALENT. You can start making arguments like this when Kimbo beats a real fighter (without having the ref. give him the fight on a silver platter).

First of all basketball is a TEAM sport so no one should exp. shaq to bust 3s that is because it is not his role on the TEAM. Sports where you compete alone are called indiviual sports. So the problem with kimbo is that he dose need to know how to properly pull off submissions or have a good sprawl. Because unlike shaq he cant have Bas go in there to get the game winning sub.

What he's saying is mostly true. The part about him "deserving accolades as long as he keeps winning" is nonsense, but his point about kimbo attracting TONS of new spectators to the sport is accurate. Think about how many people who never watched MMA started tuning in to see kimbo's freakshow fights.
Bottom line is whether they're ignorant or not more spectators = more exposure for the sport in general NOT just for Kimbo, which also means more money for the athletes and the overall expansion of the sport in the long run. People who know a decent amount about MMA write them off as being ignorant fans or temporary fans, but there's definitely a segment of that group that will get interested in MMA as a result of Kimbo's fights.
As a fighter yeah, he's a joke, he's being protected, and he really isn't good at any one thing, including standup. That doesn't change the fact that he's important as a means of drawing people to the sport. Shaw is using him to draw people to EXC, but the fact is that people being drawn to smaller organizations are almost automatically going to be drawn to the UFC if they found it interesting.
Kimbo really is a good thing for the sport. There's no such thing as bad publicity. As long as people are hearing about and talking about MMA it's a good thing for the sport. The fans' level of knowledge isn't important, it's the money they're willing to invest into the sport that matters.

the person that wrote that story is clueless. That's like saying Don King is good for boxing. Its not Kimbo's fault but what he stands for is not what MMA is about.
