It appears that Dan Henderson’s return to the middleweight division wasn’t a one-time deal to challenge UFC champion Anderson Silva. MMAWeekly.com has confirmed with sources close to the camp of Brazilian Top Team fighter Rousimar Palhares that he has signed to fight Henderson in a 185-pound divisional bout at UFC 88 on Sept. 6 in Atlanta.

Henderson has stated several times in the past that he prefers to fight at light heavyweight, but the bout with Palhares will keep him in the middleweight division, at least for the time being.

Henderson lost his last two bouts, both being title fights. He was defeated by Silva at UFC 82 in Columbus earlier this year and lost in a light heavyweight title bout to Quinton Jackson in September of last year. Prior to those two defeats, Henderson had won two in a row – over Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort – and held both the middleweight and light heavyweight Pride championship belts simultaneously.

One of the fastest rising talents of the Brazilian Top Team, Rousimar Palhares made his Octagon debut last month against Ivan Salaverry at UFC 84. Improving his record to 8-1 as a professional, Palhares also earned Submission of the Night honors and a $75,000 bonus check for his slick submission of Salaverry via armbar.

Palhares has finished six of his eight victories by submission, including both Daniel Acacio and Fabio Negao in one night to win the Fury FC middleweight title. He is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic submission specialists to recently emerge from Brazil.

UFC 88 will take place on Sept. 6 at the Philips Arena in Atlanta. The main event features former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell in a battle with undefeated Ultimate Fighter Season 2 winner Rashad Evans.

UFC 88 Bouts (officially announced):
-Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans

UFC 88 Bouts (unannounced):
-Dan Henderson vs. Rousimar Palhares
-James Lee vs. Tim Boetsch

Henderson in the past has been difficult to submit. I know Anderson did it in there fight, but he hung in there with big nog. I like Hendo in this fight. I can't wait to see how Palhares handles a tougher opponent. Should be good.

I think Rousimar Palhares takes this one, he has good submissions and he beat The Salaverry(just saying) so I'm taking him to win

Hmmm.

Can Palhares get Hendo down on the mat so he can use his JJ, i'm not sure he can ( although i don't know a lot about Palhares so can't be sure)

I'm thinking Dan for the 1st round KO.

I would like to see Hendo against a more well known, higher on the food chain opponent (like Franklin, Bisping, Macdonald). Someone the casual fan knows.

Palhares is a game opponent but he hasn't faced anyone like Hendo and is doomed to be KO'd. He must first get it to the ground and his strength will not help him with a stronger Hendo. Then he must sub a very hard to sub guy. Silva got him because Silva hurt him BADLY.

Hendo will easily take this one.

i wanted to see that fight as well, but this is the UFC protecting their investment in Henderson. He lost his last 2 fights, yes they were title fights but it's still 2 losses in a row. If he fought Franklin there is a good chance that fight could go either way.

I don't see Palhares taking it to the ground, i think Hendo's TD defense is too good. Henderson wins via round 1 KO

BAD matchup for Henderson. If Anderson subbed him Rousimar definatley will. Best bjj in the mw division.

Yeah i think they are just trying to give Henderson some momentum so that they can make Franklin-Hendo a headliner towards the end of the year.

Not that Palhares is a can or anything. Hes got a chance to take this one if he can get Hendo to the ground. Im suprised they are feeding Palhares to top tier guys though. He should be fighting off that second tier of guys (Bisping-Leben-Cote-Maia-a few others) to determine a respectable contender.

it's about time hendo gets another fight. palhares has unbelievable bjj so hendo will need to be extremely careful. i don't think palhares will be able to take hendo down, but he doesn't have to. hendo could take him down. i'm sure palhares is very comfortable on his back. it might not be franklin/hendo, but it's definitely an interesting match up.

this was a terrible move by the UFC (unless they are trying to fast track Palhares). Palhares is a great fighter that's just relatively unknown. I don't want to see either fighter lose. This is a great fight that the casual observer will think is a can. I hope Hendo wins b/c Palhares really has nothing to lose. If he loses to Hendo his career in the UFC isn't dead. However if Hendo loses to a supposed 'no-name' like Palhares he's in trouble. Still, i don't know who i would pick for this fight.

Yeah but anderson didn't take Dan down until he rocked him. Rousimar is no even close to Anderson in the striking dep. Not to mention Dan hung in with Nog.

A fight between Palhares and Maia would be pretty crazy.

But on to this fight. We are going to see what Palhares can do in his other mma aspects, striking, clinch, wrestling. If he cant get hendo down. Palhares could play the spoiler on this card. Idk i can't decide who i think will take it. Im leaning toward palhares.

Dan will wear on him until the ko. A. Silva submitted him because he hurt him. Not going to happen here or against Silva again when he gets the rematch.
