In the past week, a major change of guard occurred in the UFC’s welterweight division, when Matt Hughes was dismantled and knocked out by Thiago Alves. With Alves establishing himself as the top contender to the winner of the upcoming St. Pierre - Fitch title bout, it is a good time to take a look at the current state of the 170 lbs weight class.
Between stars like St. Pierre, veterans such as Hughes & Matt Serra, top contenders like Alves and Fitch, and newcomers such as Dan Hardy & David Baron, UFC has a tight lock on the welterweight division. According to the latest Fightmatrix.com ranking, all of the Top 5, 8 of the Top 10, and 14 of the Top 20 welterweights in the world are currently under UFC contract. The division is so deep that there are over 30 ranked welterweights competing in the UFC today!
An in-depth look at the top echelon of the 170 division:

The WW division is strong. I don't see anyone beating a 100% focused and healthy GSP for a while though.

I have a feeling Fitch is going to grind out a win over GSP. What happens after that I don't know but Alves is no doubt in the picture. Swick is up there, Diego, Koz, Neer and Marcus are tough. Not to mention the up and comers like Sotiropoulos, Rumble and Fioravanti. Stacked division.

Now that would knock the WW division WIDE OPEN!
I can't see it happening myself though.....

If kos wins his next fight with Lytle, i see him challenging the winner of GSP v Fitch.

my ufc welterweight division rankings.
Champ: GSP- i don't think he's going anywhere for a while.
1. Fitch- an animal who will be tough for gsp to beat, but i think he puts him away in the fourth. 2. Alves- the guy is a beast, his striking is so dangerous. he would give gsp a fight. 3. Koscheck- i think he is the second best guy in the division but he needs another win or two to put him back in title contention, imo it will happen. 4. Diego- two straight losses to two tough guys, but i think if he fights fitch and kos again he can beat them both, he could be back in belt contention soon too. 5. Swick- two straight wins over two tough welteweights puts him in the top 5, he will make some noise in this division. 6. Karo- gatekeeper may be a bit too strong, he can beat anybody on any given night. 7. Hughes- still a legend but doesn't look to get back into the title picture. 8. Serra- got his moment at the top and deserves credit for it, but i don't think he will be making a splash in this weight class again. 9. Davis- needs to string together another nice win streak to get back into the upper tier. 10. Burkman- underrated, i thought he beat swick, but he is still a long ways away from title contention and he has a tough fight with hazlett coming up.

A 100% focused BJ Penn would dismantle St. Pierre. But yet again BJ is not a weleterweight as of now. St. Pierre is lucky.

This division is getting exciting and prob due to the long hold-off thanks to Serra. I want to see how Anthony Johnson continues to do along with Marcus Davis. Plus, one of my favorite fighters just began destroying the division by going through 6 opponents including Hughes and Karo.

Technically that's wrong. The Hughes fight wasn't in the Welterweight division.

Thats bull, you don't cut line like that when GSP dismantled him in a 3 round fight. Alves is more deserving. Kos would need a win over Lytle and then a top contender.

Technically, Hughes should have been Welterweight champion once again but Serra wasn't up for it

Their is no way Alves is getting the winner between GSP v Fitch, Not after not making weight, he'll end up having to win one more fight before he gets his shot which leads me to believe Kos would be next.
