Today's failure to make weight for his fight against Matt Hughes isn't the first time Thiago Alves has battled the scales. Back in early 2007 Alves was suspended for using diuretics to help him make weight for his fight against Tony DeSouza:

I don't think he will be gone from the UFC. He is an improving fighter, and missed his weight. He had the problem with testing positive in the past, but I think Dana will keep him around.

Nah, he's on a short leash that's for sure. But if he loses to welterweight LEGEND Matt Hughes, he won't get cut. However if he loses 2 straight after not making weight for a main event (example, Travis Lutter) Then he's gone. You don't throw away that big a prospect for not making weight once. This is a guy who had he been in any of the Ultimate Fighter shows for welterweights would have blown them away. But he is in deep doo doo and will not get any bonuses that's for sure.

Dana said that if this was a title match then Alves would be gone from the UFC, so he's definately treading on thin ice

Alves isn't going anywhere, even IF he loses this fight and the one after. He's very good, very young, and very marketable (unlike Lutter). Dana may be pissed, but he's not stupid. Alves will get the message not to do it again.

No way do they give a good exciting fighter like Alves walking papers! On the other hand, I think if Alves misses one more cut you can expect Dana to say that's enough and move him to the MW division. Then if he fails there you could see a cut. Although I don't think he will fare bad in the MW division.

He'd be tiny ..... the guy can't be any taller than 5'9". Most guy's his size would lose a little bit so that they could be large LWs.....like Spencer Fisher did. Robbie Lawler was able to move up because he's 5'11" and has a larger shoulder width....a frame better built for the weight. Thiago is pretty much maxed out muscle wise. I think they won't let him lose more than 2 times in a row without being cut, not now that he's pissed off Dana.

this weight issue has been is blown way out of hand, besides didnt dana say he wanted 250 wandys, he wants exciting fighters who have potential to be champions, theres no way he gets rid of thiago unless he blows 3 fights in a row, which isnt happening

He needs to move up to the next weight class or try to make the weight. He didn't look like someone that was trying very hard to make weight at the weigh-ins or in the fight so he needs to move up. Its disrespectful to everyone to come in over weight. If your unable to make weight without the help of drugs then your either to big to make the weight cut or you don't care its that simple. I'm sick of fighters trying to cut and cant or wont try to make the weight (Gina). If you cant make the weight then don't cut so far move up to the next weight class. Its easy to see Thiago is unable or unwilling to make the cut. If he or anyone else thinks his next fight will be for a title they are sadly mistaken the UFC cant take the chance of him not making weight again or cheating to make weight. I bet he is going to have to fight a few more times before they even think about giving him a title shot.

Lawler actually couldn't lift weights in order to make 170, so he found himself stronger at 185 and thus more comfortable.
