My girlfriend just found out she has Scoliosis... (Curvature Of The Spine.)

the long terms effects of which can be prevented through different exercises and stretches focusing on the upper body by increasing muscle tone and flexabilty of the body as a whole.

i was wondering if anyone could help me develop a good workout routine for (in Order) Her Back (upper and lower) Abs and Hips.

the plan should include muscle toning, Flexability, and overall Strength.

Thank you Everyone..

sorry to hear that
a good low impace strech/excerise for the lower back is well we called it a bird dog you start on all fours then at first you straited out your right arm and left leg and balence on your left arm and right leg and hold for 15-30sec it looks weired and sounds weird but it will help.thats for lower back another lower back is take a 5lbs plate weight hold it above your head and bend at 90 degrees. for abs theres millons but a good one to start would be flutter kicks the best way i no is a 1 2 3 1 1 2 3 2 1 2 3 3....count. thats all i can think of off top but ill re post if i think of any
hopefully this helps if not i tryed

One word: YOGA

Yoga will help her core strength and overall flexibility and will allow her to progress at a rate she feels comfortable with. Yoga also teaches proper body mechanics i.e. how to move properly.

There are many styles of yoga and more vigorous ones might not be appropriate. I have done Hatha style for a few years and think it might be appropriate, but do some reasearch (start with wikipedia)

Also, take some time to see how the teacher interacts with the students. i.e. is the teacher teaching or demonstrating. You want a teacher because everyone needs to be corrected and challenged because we all have different bodies.

Finally, you want a teacher that will be understanding to her physical situation. i.e. there might be certain poses that she just cannot do.

Another thing about yoga class is not only are there other people there with which to interact, but it also provides some structure which helps motivate certain people more so than just doing it at home.

Good luck

On top of a workout routine, a back brace will do wonders. I know someone that had severe curvature of the spine several years ago, due to scoliosis. Although he works out several times a week, the brace helped him straighten his spine in what seemed like no time flat. It was a brace that was specifically for straightening of the spine...and it was discrete enough to wear under his shirt. He doesn't even look like the same person now. I know prevention is the best medicine, but this is something to keep in mind if she already has some curvature...or experiences some in the future.

I agree entirely and would add that the low impact nature of Yoga is a perfect fit for her.
Some people might be put off by the "spiritual" aspects of some Yoga classes, but there are many studios which have done away with it's Indian roots. Whatever "experience" you and her are looking for, there is a class out there for you.

First off talk to her doctor. Ask to be refered to a physical rehab specialist and talk to them.. they can do wonders.. While there is some great advice here... YOu want her doctors involvement just in case.. plus if she has decent insurance they may pay for all she needs...

Just keep in mind with the chiropractor, only go if it is actually helping her (noticeably). Chiropractors will try to put her on a regimen and it can end up costing a lot of money. So unless she feels a noticeable difference, I wouldn't go on a regular basis.

Also, my experiences with chiropractors is that they tend to adjust the easy stuff, but sometimes miss the "harder to re-align" bones. I'm not sure if this applies to her condition, but my experience with a chiropractor was that it made me feel good for a bit, but he never fixed the problem. I ended up going to one session of PT and they fixed the problem.
