Recently crowed WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner (14-2) will make his first title defense against Marcus Hicks (8-0) at the WEC's Aug. 3 event in Las Vegas.

A source close to Varner today confirmed the rumored bout with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Formal announcement of that fight, and others, is expected to come during Sunday's "WEC 34: Faber vs. Pulver" event, which airs live from California's ARCO Arena on VERSUS beginning at 9 p.m. ET.

Varner claimed the WEC belt with a third-round TKO of Rob McCullough in February. The Arizona Combat Sports fighter has lost just once -- via third-round submission to Hermes Franca at UFC 62 -- in his past 16 fights (with two no-contests).

Soon after winning the title, Varner helped push through litigation that calls for the regulation of mixed martial arts in the state of Arizona. Varner wrote about that experience in a guest column for MMAjunkie.com.

Hicks, meanwhile, has posted eight consecutive victories -- six via submission -- to begin his professional career. He's 3-0 in the WEC with three consecutive victories via guillotine choke over Sergio Gomez, Scott McAfree and, most recently, Ed Ratcliff in March. "The Wrecking Ball" is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt but also has professional boxing experience.

For more on WEC 35, which will likely be headlined by WEC welterweight champ Carlos Condit vs. Hiromitsu Miura or WEC light heavyweight champ Brian Stann vs. Steve Cantwell, check out the MMA Rumors section of MMAjunkie.com.

Hicks is too tough! The man can take a beating so I think KOing him is out of the picture. And Jamie is known for being a submissions expert and I doubt you submit Hicks anyways with anything other then an armbar. I don't think he'd tap to a choke, you need to rip that arm off.

I predict Hicks 2nd Round submission, they'll have a brawl on the feet in the first until Varner takes him down. Lays on him to win round 1. Same thing in the 1st except when Varner takes him down Hicks catches him in that Guillotine of his that if you don't tap, he'll break your neck!!!

I think Varner takes it by decision or late KO....he's got the striking advantage with his size and speed, plus he's an outstanding wrestler.

Varner showed lots of heart in his last fight, and is a solid fighter. I like Hicks in this fight. He has big power, and is more than comfotable standing or on the ground.

Wow, a lot of people are picking Hicks....I though this would be lopsided in terms of almost everyone picking Varner.

Varner is bigger, faster, has the better wrestling, we know he has the cardio (but does Hicks?), and better striking. Varner will probably keep this standing and pick apart Hicks and maybe here and there take Hicks down.

Varner by late stoppage.

Varner doesn't have a double. He only shoots singles and firemans

Varner is going to walk through Hicks in this fight. Hicks seems to slow and tentative for a guy like Varner.
