Having re-watched UFC 84, I have to say that Sean Sherk, despite fighting hard for almost three full rounds against the best 155lb fighter in the world, didn't give it his best.

In the post fight interview, Rogan asked Sherk why he didn't try harder to take B.J. down. Sherk said it was because he felt he was "competitive" against B.J. on his feet.

I think it's rediculous for people to say that it would have been smart to sit in BJ's guard for 5 rounds. Thats like taking Fedor down, giving Cro Cop space, clinching with Randy, or letting Nog get on top. Some people should change the way they think about mma. Sherk in all honesty picked his best chance for victory, he could have landed one huge shot and ended it, or he could have gotten BJ to wear himself out, or he could have wasted time trying to take BJ down when he was fresh, maybe got reversed and then dominated when BJ was on top, or he could have gotten him down and ended up like Hughes, or Pulver.

Good post, was there any word on his right hand? Seemed like sherk was having troble getting it off. Looked like he might have injured it.

Not that it would have helped him either way.

im pretty sure i heard at one point that the idea was to get bj tired before he took him to the ground. thus making him more safe from the ground game while he would still more than likely be fresh as round 1. also they figured with bj's takedown defense it would be easier to get em down in the l8er rounds rather than waisting all his energy and failing in the beginning

ok.
to my knowledge there is NOTHING wrong with his hand, when he shruged his hand off, it was because Mario brushed up against his elbow in round 3 mid way through.

I never really looked at it like that but it makes alot of sense. His best chance to beat someone as talented as BJ would probably be to stand up and hope he catches him. It's probably the best strategy against GSP as well, even though he is very talented on his feet too. The only probablem I see with that for Sherk is that, if he truely believed he was a better fighter then Penn, then he should not adapt to BJ, he should go to his strength, which is wrestling. Yeah BJ is dangerous from his back, but at least try to mix it up. He is the fighter he is today by taking people down and controling the fight on his terms. BJ is going to be dangerous wherever the fight goes.

Where is Sherk best at? On top of someone on the ground right? So why wouldn't it have been a better gameplan in the 3rd. I agree with the first two rounds because he was doing alright in the standup. But the 3rd he was getting demolished. He should have went to where he's the best at, and thats on the ground. Even though BJ is a great submission artist. You have to try your luck where your the best.

This is exactly how I thought the fight would go, except for the fact that BJ didn't have to force the fight to stay on the feet. I can see where Sherk was coming from wanting to stay on the feet since his stand up is better than decent. However, BJ looks MUCH improved, his jab was just picture perfect, and when Sherk can't get in range, there isn't much he can do. At that point, I'm surprised he didn't take it to the ground or atleast attempt to, but playing in BJ's guard isn't a good idea either. Sherk was simply outclassed, and I really don't see any feasible threat to BJ in the near future.

his take downs were horrendus attempts... above the waist.

we all know sherk could do better he didnt try to take him down and thats a reason why he got murdered on his feet

If Sherk would have used more leg kicks, I think he could have won in a standup fight.

BJ is really tough to do anything against but when did sherk ever knock anyone out?? I loved watching BJ dodge and then just Jab away at Sherks face- Id like to see sherk v Florian now that Florian has stepped up...

I was expecting a ground war from the start and was amazed to see it not go down once, I think it made for a better fight in the end tho.

Although I wanted Sherk to win I knew BJ would probably take it, I did like Sherk's gameplan but like most of you wish he would started to shoot in the 3rd. And also I wish he wouldn't of bounced off the cage to end the third which totally set up BJ's knee...but it is what it is. If BJ moves up to WW I can see Sherk reclaiming the belt at some point, BJ is on fire right now and should have no problem with Kenflo or Huerta....

Shrek went for a take down early and BJ did his splits sprawl. I think it is impossible to single leg BJ. Shrek couldn't take BJ down. BJ stood between rounds, he wasn't going to gas this fight. Funny everyone said Shrek by cardio but it was BJ by superior skill and cardio.

Shrek should just admit he couldn't take BJ down, not that he didn't want to. I am now waiting on more than one Shrek admission.
