what was up with that. i can't believe he abandoned the take downs. i would have understood his strategy if he stood for the first two and then tried the takedowns but he did the same thing in the third. the guy is a wrester, a phenomenal wrestler who is unbelievable from top position. now i know bj has great takedown defense but sherk didn't really even try. i can't believe what i saw and i wasn't at all suprised to see him knocked out after going with that game plan.

I was thinking the same thing. Penn had a HUGE reach advantage over Sherk and even though he had some, an by some I mean a tiny amount of success with the stand up he would stood a much better chance if he'd have mixed it up after the second or even mid way through the third. I suppose hindsight is something all fighters wish they had though. I was impressed with Sherks boxing as well, had it been anyone other than BJ they would have been in for a long, long night!
BJ showed he was the best at LW and I don't see anyone arguing with that.

Definitely the wrong gameplan! What was up with his right hand? Joe and Goldie mentioned it during the fight and he was shaking it a couple times and for the most part quit throwing it and just threw left hooks.

I'm pretty sure Sherk thought if he layed on top of BJ he was putting himself in danger because of BJs incredible flexability. He was winning the standup so I can't complain with the strategy.
BJ stands with low hands and Sherk kept his high and threw a bunch of loopy shots that hit their target. I can't complain considering he was winning.
Plus he could've been waiting for sweat to come over him so BJ couldn't get the sub and realized he was winning the standup.

Definetally agree. I've been thinking this ever since the fight now.

sherk had a game plan to take him down but he abandoned it after a few trys. Guess he realized after watching hughes try to take him down and failing himself that it was pretty well near impossible .Bj has some crisp jabs i'll tell you. To the dude who said sherk was winning the stand up Sherk's face was a mess as usual after the fight. He has alot of scar tissue. I think bj looked in better cardio shape then sherk.

sherk should have just bull rushed bj, because his game plan wasnt workings, i mean i picked sherk to win, but that 3inch reach advantage for bj was working for him, cus sherk wiffed like 30 times.

Agree with 20Dollars, Sherk should have bullrushed and try for the take down over and over again. Yes he does have very technical boxing, but just does not have the reach to trade strikes like that from a distance. He was not doing too bad with the leg kicks, but I am just surprised at Sherks gameplan.

Bj is so hard to take down, and if you do get him down you definetly can't stay there for 5 rounds. It was acctually the best place for Sherk to have a chance since one punch could have ended it all.

sherk was losing the fight on the feet, but his hand speed was very impressive and i was worried a couple of times that he might catch bj. not a great strategy at all by sherk though, he ate so many crisp jabs i almost felt sorry for him, but those guys both showed great chins throughout the fight and bj showed why hes the best LW in the world. it was hilarious that bj basically was the one that stopped the fight though(it was over anyways), i guess having the belt has its priveledges.

I think people just don't realise who difficult it is to take b.j down. I mean, look at matt hughes, a bigger more powerful version of sherk, and he couldn't do shit to b.j in terms of takedowns. If sherk had of just tried to shoot constantly he would of looked worse on the score cards becouse b.j would of just escaped or cracked him and made sherk look silly.
Tbh, sherks stand up actually looked quite good, he was throwing good shots, good leg kicks and had decent defence, but b.j really used his reach advantage and his own really quick striking to neutralise it.
And i mean, lets be honest, would anybody really be best advised to sit in b.js guard for 5 rounds? i dont think so. I think his plan was to let b.j tire himself out for 3 rounds, then take him down and try and get a tko in the latter 2. I think joe stevenson was going to try that to, but b.js just to dangerous. Their isnt really a gameplan to beat b.j, becouse hes so good at everything.

I don't know what Sherk was thinking, if he was thinking at all. No attempts for a takedown. It is really hard to stand with someone who has such a reach advantage, especially someone who knows how to use it. All in all it was a terrible performance. By the way is it just me or did anyone else see this fight and another fight stopped Prematurely. I thought you could be saved by the bell.(no pun intended)
