Our strength and conditioning coach has us do box squats and they are much harder than regular squats. If you have never heard of them its when you have a small wooden box and when you are squating you sit down on the box and relax then explode back up. My question is are you a believer in box squats?

I'm not sure it's the same but in my previous camp we did cardio with upside down benches.... Jump up, down, sit & jump etc... I kinda HATE them
Absolutely mindblowing exercise after the whole training...

Edit:

We did a very 'nice' exercise too.. First you do the squat and when you stand, (very fast) you make a front kick (Mae Geri)

I would rather just do regular squats, jump squats, or hindu squats. I guess he is going for an explosive kind of move, but jump squats do the job nicely. Whatever works I suppose.

I think my kneecaps would shoot off if I tried that.

Oddly enough, I've always found box squats to be easier on my knees (but a little rougher on my lower back). As a result, I can do a bit more weight with them (620 x 3 box squat versus 570 x 3 regular squat).I've always had good results from them, but I don't go for mass building as much as just pure strength, so YMMV.And no, they're not necessarily the same.

A friend of mine is an olympic power lifter hopeful, and on the national bobsled developmental team. He's just finished his degree in human kinetics and is a wealth of knowledge in strength conditioning. Doing squats past 90 degrees is much easier on your knees and also works your gluteous medialis and some other muscle groups I forget the name of (noob=me). doing squats hitting ass to ankles is much better for you.

Both my knees are junked though, so I wouldn't dare risk it. I do hindu squats with a weight vest, and go for reps, as I can't handle too much weight.

That's great to hear. I've been doing ass to grass squats all my life and never had any problems with my knees but I've been worried about them since I usually train with relatively heavy weight.
Thanks.

Never done box squats, but have done many box sprawls. Jump up on that same wooden box, jump back down, sprawl .....so on and so forth.

we did them in high school for basketball training. they are harder i would say, because when you sit on that box the weight is transfered from your legs mostly to your back. it doesn't kill your back necessarily, just alot of pressure for that split second you're sitting, especially if you're squatting with a lot of weight like we were. overall, though, they're great for explosiveness (vertical jump in our case), as well as being a decent overall strength exercise.

I don't like squats because the weight is too hard on my shoulders.
