Our latest MMAjunkie.com poll results surprised just about everyone, including the panel on this past Friday's edition of "Inside MMA."

Last week we ran a simple but what proved to be a telling question: "Have you attended a live MMA event in the past year."

The results were revealed on "Inside MMA," and they should have fight promoters -- especially those who plan to rely solely on ticket sales -- taking notice.

When all the votes were tallied, 51 percent of respondents said they haven't been to a show in the past year while 49 percent said they had. That means a big segment of the MMA fan base -- one committed enough to frequent an MMA news site and weekly MMA TV show -- hasn't bought a single ticket to an MMA event in the past 12 months.http://mmajunkie.com/news/4326/inside-mma-poll-results-do-fans-really-attend-mma-events.mma

I don't think it's all that surprising to be honest. Several fans don't bother with the small shows...and for the majority of people, the large shows rarely come to your town, if at all.

I've never been to one and i've been watching for a very long time. When I was younger,it was because I never knew were it was happening, and now that i'm older,I would rather just sit in the comforts of my home and drink a beer, than deal with the crowds.

I love the Denver Broncos and the last game I attended was when they beat the Pats in the playoffs. I've been watching MMA since UFC 1 and I've been to 3 live events, all in the last 18 months. Ring of Fire twice and UFN. Clearly TV success is the most important factor for a sport to grow. Just ask the NFL.

I have been to one event in the last year. I saw Shogun Forrest and Jardine Chuck etc. The energy was like nothing I had ever witnessed before. I had decent seats that cost around $200 ea. and had to drive to Anahiem from Phoenix so add Hotel, Food and Gas and it ended up costing $850. That isn't so bad but I ended up watching the monitor the entire time because it had the best view. I had anticipated that event more than any other and was a bit let down because there was no comentating I just came away wonder what the Hell just happened (Diego lost Chuck lost Shogun lost... for me a night of upsets)
So I decided that I will go agian but with floor seats and Especially If the event comes to Phoenix. If you have never been I strongly suggest you go. I like seeing it on TV better but I have to experience the "Octagon Side" one of these days.

fight tix are expensive, the nosebleed seats are real bad for mma and boxing cuz its only two guys instead of a whole team on a field and there are much less events in mma and boxing than in big team sports.

I would bet more than half of boxing fans havent been to an event either. Also, how many NFL fans went to a game? Less than half for sure. same with golf and NBA i bet too. Not saying MMA is bigger or smaller; just that a percentage that went to a game is not that important.

The only ones I can be sure that more than half of the fans went to go see are MLB where there are thousands of games and its an american institution or NHL which has a small niche fan base and also a ton of games in 30 different cities.

This poll doesn't hold any negative meaning when you look at it. I think 50% is a real good number actually.

annnnd - did I pay ANY money to see NFL this year even though I watch it all the time? No. NBA - same thing? no. Did I pay with myself and others over 400 bucks to see UFC and other PPV's this year? yes. did I buy any DVD's which are great in MMA and boring for other sports? yes. Is UFC always in the top 10 sports DVD sales in the nation? yes. Am I using rhetorical questions too much? probably.

I haven't gone to an mma event for 18 months - but I spent at least 10 times more on the MMA world than all other sports combined. Theres more than one way to skin a cat.

Yeah this isn't a suprise. I live in Detroit so its not like i can just get up and go to Vegas every other month or 2 to spend $300 or more a ticket at a UFC event. The last event that was closest to me was Cincinnati and i wasn't going to drive 4 1/2 hours to watch Franklin get his face beat in. Instead I went to a friends to watch and spent $10-$15 on some booze and had a better time !
