Even so, Pitbull is not intimidated, and in a talk with GRACIEMAG.com affirms that he is the perfect adversary to take him to his objective: the belt.
“I’m training like mad and I’m really strong with a lot of wind. MMA demands a lot of effort and training to not leave anything to chance. We brought in some wrestlers to train and we’re putting together the right strategy for the fight. To me, experience is what counts. Hughes is already in the UFC Hall of Fame and has only lost to Saint-Pierre. But I’ve been doing this since I was 15 in muay thai and MMA. I can’t be satisfied being just another one, I want to be the best and I’ll only leave dead. They were giving me ever tougher opponents each time and now they send in Matt, but the name doesn’t matter, I’m taking this win for the ATT,” Thiago guaranteed

Hope he wins, The division would benefit more from Thiago winning, because if matt wins, he sends thiago back down the ladder, and it eliminates another contender without gaining one (since i Highly doubt hughes would go for the title again). It would open more doors if alves takes the win here. Still it will be a tough match for him.

i agree.. thiago needs to win for the sake of the division. if he doesnt.. then it becomes stale just like 185... and the #2 ranked guy can't beat the champ... oh well.. I'm starting to believe in thiago ... haven't changed my pick yet.. but maybe

The sake of the division? Are you freaking kidding me? Dude the 170 division is probably one of the strongest in the UFC. Not quite sure why Thiago losing would hurt it. You got guys like Marcus Davis, Jon Fitch, Karo (even though he lost), Mike Swick, Josh Koscheck, I mean come on. Thiago Alves losing to Hughes wouldn't hurt a damn thing. I think Thiago is being overrated anyway. The only quality opponent I believe he beat was Karo in this winning streak. I remember Thiago getting his ass kicked by Jon Fitch not so long ago. Another why is everyone not on Alves ass about his steriod suspension and everyone is all over Sherk? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Thiago has a really good shot at beating hughes imo. If hughes gets cockey and tries to show his striking (i dont think he will, but hes proved me wrong before) hes going to sleep early. Hughes only real chance is to be on top of alves the whole time becouse i dont see him getting a sub, and i think alves will have a good enough guard to prevent hughes from doing any serious gnp. Its a hard fight for me to pick, but i just think alves will catch hughes eventually and tko him.
Still, even with that said ive got hughes as my pick, i just dont trust picking against him. Ill probably be changing till the last minute with this fight.

Yeah I see where Matt beating Thiago could hurt the division, but if he can't beat Hughes there is no way he can beat GSP. This is a good test for Thiago, we get to see where he stands in the division. Losing tells me that he is not a threat for the title right now, and winning tells me he is on his way. Win or lose we should see Hughes vs Serra within the year, culminating in Matt's retirement.

Thiago is going to win, I have zero doubt of this. I see Karo beating Hughes so this is just another fight were Thiago has to sprawl and get the KO, ever since working with Ferguson the Judo expert, he has found a phenominal ability to stop the takedowns and keep it where he wants. I would go as far as saying he would beat Fitch in a rematch and give GSP a good fight if not win.
Thiago, KO 1st or 2nd round

I used to get excited about Matt Hughes fights, but not anymore. He seems worn out or something, he doesn't have that fire in his eyes.
I think Thiago will defeat him if Matt comes in looking the way he did against GSP recently. If he does win though, the way GSP is handing out ass-whoopings by way of total domination, I dont see Thiago offering him much. He needs to fight Fitch again to see who is the contender I think.
Hughes/Serra doesnt excite me today the way it did when last season of TUF was over.

Why would Fitch have to fight Alves again to get a tilte shot? Fitch should be GSP's next fight no doubt about it. He's done more than enough already to deserve a title shot.

how about because I want to see that fight more than I want to see GSP totally maul another hapless victim.
It's not always about rankings,eh? Ask poor Keith Jardine who should be fighting for the title right now instead of fighting the guy who just lost to the guy he just beat. Not that I care either way, I'm just pointing out "fair" doesn't seem to be a factor most of the time, it's what puts asses in seats.

It an earlypost I waxed portically of my love for the sport- ANYONE can BEAT anyone- on anygiven night-
That being said- Look for hughes to Kick alves ASS!! get the fight with Sera- Hopefully kick Serras ass - (I like Hughes less than I ever have but I like Serra even less) and then see Matt retire- and land i the hall of fame.
We saw Irvine KO Houston- no one is jumping on his Jock saying hes the man- we Know that Evans will beat him- Alves got a great punch on a fighter who is known not to train hard and overlook oponents- I still think thats all that happened Alved got a 1 in 10 quick KO- we did not see him really fight or prove how great he is.
Take Huhes on this one in grind it out take down schooling....

I will say the Jardine situation is a clusterf***. If he wouldn't have lost to Alexander he would be fighting Jackson right now and not Forrest (should anyway).
Otherwise I don't think that situation compares at all with Fitch's situation. Why would a guy have to face a guy he's beat already to get a shot? Especially when he hasn't lost a fight in the UFC before or after beating that guy. I could understand if Fitch had lost a fight after beating Alves which would bring him down a bit, but he hasn't. As far as putting asses in the seats, would Alves vs. Fitch or GSP vs. Fitch put more asses in the seats? My answer is there probably would be the same amount.

the only names i see are GSP, Fitch, thiago, Hughes, Karo. IMO.. if GSP can get his confidence to stay consistent.. he wont be losing anytime soon. on top of that.. you have karo, fitch, thiago who are contenders and about the samel evel.. then you have hughes, serra kinda on their way out imo. marcus davis? maybe..
at 185 you have silva, then franklin, hendo, okami.... and who else?same damn thing
oh and swick and koshcheck? look man.. kos? i'm a wreslter.. i cheer for wreslters.. but kos isnt going anywhere anytime soon.. more time and maybe
