I'm so sick of seeing all the media hounds jumping on the Kimbo bandwagon . I seriously believe if he fights a top heavyweight like Coture or Nog he'll get pounded & I can't beleive Bas Rutten is so caught up in the hype!!

Dude Bas is right, all he ever says is that Kimbo gets talked about and thats why people hate him, they're jelouse. Not of Kimbo's fighting ability which still has to be fully tested, but because of all the attention he is getting. Hate the media, hate your friends... but don't hate Kimbo. Its not like Kimbo walks around saying he'd beat Randy or Nog's ass..

just don't pay attention to it.
Wrestling has a lot of fans, there's a guy there who was a WWE champ but also NCAA wrestling champion, he goes to the UFC, wrestling fans start checking UFC.
Youtube has a lots of fans with a hight number of them liking violent videos of people fighting. There is a guy who beats the crap out of everyone. One guy thinks "hmmm this guy can punch and everybody knows him DING DING DING $$$$$$" EliteXC sign him to start MMA. Youtubers start watching EXC too.
OK before you start yelling at me, please note that I'm not comparing Lesnar to Kimbo b/c as fighters the story is WAAAy different one from being actual sports and the other from street brawling. I'm talking about MARKETING SCENARIOS.
As for Kimbo as a MMA fighter, he's unbeaten and famous and that's a fact. Has he fought real "competition? NO. Rank him Top 25 maybe? NO.
I also don't like all the hype from the media (but I understand what they're doing). But neither I like people and other fighters throwing trash at him. Blame the media, not him. He's just an internet star trying to make some money people. The only different thing between him and the random pro-MMA guy from your local gym(let's call him JOE) with also NO previous official combat sports experience is just that people already know him. So Chuck, Dana and all these fighters saying that he would get owned owned in the UFC is like saying that JOE would face the same thing. DOH! of course, they're rookies in the sport no matter how you look at it. The only difference, as I already mentioned, is that Kimbo has the shortcut, so he can make up his name faster. Let's see how he does against JT. Then against the next one and so on. hopefully they'll keep increasing his opponents leve as he moves up so we can see if he is for real or not. Mybe he'll end up like Houston Alexander (recall that after his 2 fights UFC was using him already in the UFC78 commercial as the new LHW Powerhouse KO man )

I don't look to the idiot media for my mma news.
The only threads I see on good sites like this bash the guy unnecessarily because he has the early career hype every fighter hopes for.

I'm sick of it, especially when you look at who he has beat:
Ray Mercer-the guys a 46 year old retired Boxer, not mma fighter. Bo Cantrell-Never even heard of the guy, and he took an obvious dive in the fight Tank Abbott-He beat Tank, who not only is old but has never beaten any one near the top ten.
I'm so sick of hearing about Kimbo I can't wait till his next fight when he actually fights someone who has a winning record, and gets stomped.

Noone should be surprised when James gnp's a victory. Much more experienced and well rounded fighter. Easy call.

Yeah, cause he's supposed to fight guys like Nog and Fedor for his first fights
And his opponents aren't complete cans (except for maybe Cantrell). Tank did KO Cabbage. And unless you have evidence of a dive, don't say it's obvious. Kimbo looks like he hits like a truck. Bo just didn't want no more of that and tapped out quick. No one said Bo has heart. And Mercer would probably KO a ton of MMA guys (no one near the top, but still). Those are decent first opponents for a guy who never fought MMA in his life before.
Bulletdodger FTW.
But I think all the media attention is cool. Once Kimbo gets beat by a top MMA fighter (maybe not Thompson), everyone will realize how good that fighter is, and you can't just jump into MMA from the street and expect to be champ, and it will bring legitimacy to the sport. Whoever beats him is gonna have to be pretty damn good. If his ground game is developing well, he'll be a tough fight for anyone.

Can he be good maybe in a few years. His fights haven't really proved anything and in most cases have just been media showings more than a fight. I don't expect him to come out and fight a top ten but I do expect him to fight at least a top 50 HW. If the are going to market him as this great HW then at least fight someone with a winning recorded.
But the big thing for me is I don't like how Gary Shaw is marketing him. They are marketing him as a thug and the best HW ever. Gary is marketing him more than he is his legit HWs. Like ANTONIO SILVA and RICCO RODRIGUEZ both proven HWs and both much better fighters than Kimbo. Plus the hole Thug/street fighter image is just plain bad for MMA. The guy got his fame for beating up untrained people in back yards is this really how we want people to see MMA?

I agree that starting a thread bashing him is contradictory to what the thread hopes to achieve.
He's got tons of publicity, negative, positive, every kind. How can he not? He's a big, scary looking black man with gold teeth who runs around knocking people out. How many MMA events have you been at where people say "haha, can you imagine starting a fight with one of these guys at a bar and not knowing they're these supreme badasses?!?!?!" I swear to God EVERY single time I've been to a public viewing of an MMA event somebody says it. That is what I call the "typical casual fan reaction". It's usually right alongside the "oh, this guy is going to win because he's a lot bigger and looks more in shape than the other guy" reaction.
So you take all these "typical casual fans" and you show them a big, scary looking black man with gold teeth running around knocking people out on the street and in the cage and in their minds they're thinking "YES, THIS IS WHAT ONE OF THESE BADASSES SHOULD LOOK LIKE!" So it all makes sense that he's SOOOO good in their eyes, because finally someone that's not a martial arts dork, who's a REAL badass has stepped into the game and he's going to kill everyone. Of course all these typical casual fans (read that as: the vast majority of fans) attach the supreme badass moniker to a person who strikes fear in their own hearts because all they've grown up knowing about fighting is that the bigger, scarier gangster looking dude will win the fight.
That's my opinion on why I think the average fan gives Kimbo so much credit. The educated minority will always be quieter than the ignorant masses. It's been the same throughout history in all matters. Just be satisfied in the knowledge that you personally know what's really "REAL"
As for my opinion on Kimbo I think at this stage in his career he's done everything right. I don't lend him any more credit than he deserves, and I haven't seen him lending himself any more credit than he deserves, either. He just believes in himself and so far has performed and "put asses in seats". He's also put his opponents asses on the floor of the cages he's fought in. Even though each one of those opponents has been a can I do think they have steadily gotten a little better. Going from suckiest to suckier isn't the best thing, but maybe one day he'll go from suckier to sucks, to mediocre, to o.k., to decent, to good, to great, to the best. My guess is he'll stop around good, but at least he's working his way up the ranks. That's smart, IMO.
