Just a day following Gesias "JZ" Calvancante (Pictures)'s exit from Dream's lightweight tournament, the American Top Team slugger is expected to find his way back in the field, a source from Calvancante's camp informed Sherdog.com Wednesday morning.
Shinya Aoki (Pictures), 15-2 with 1 NC, suffered a facial injury in Tuesday's bout that saw him outpoint Calvancante after two rounds. The injury will prevent the 24-year-old Japanese grappler from competing in the May 11 tournament semifinal.
According to the source, Calvancante, fresh off his first mixed martial arts loss in nearly four years, was contacted by Dream staff early Wednesday and informed of Aoki's withdrawal.

We just can't have a fight between these two without some sort of controversy now, can we? Really unfortunate that this happened because it seemed one of them finally earned the legit win.

Ironic that JZ was bitching about the short turn around between fights and now he is the beneficary of said turn around.

JZ clearly should've been awarded the 1st fight so the right guy is going through. I honestly think that this is becoming a running joke because now JZ will win the Grand Prix and will have a rubber match with Aoki.

this truly is amazing. i was looking forward to seeing Aoki take the tourney as a testament to grapplers world wide; but as others have mentioned JZ won the first fight and he should have moved on in the first place. however i disagree with it being a joke. if JZ runs the rest of the tourney...which i think he will...a rubber match with Aoki would be insane. i would love to see how JZ changes his game for their 3rd match as it seemed Aoki had the better game plan this time around.

aoki being hurt in no way takes anything away from his win. if anything it is a testament to how tough he is that he continued to fight and win. when you are hurt in a fight you win and cant continue in a tournament it doesnt take anything away from your win...

well if not JZ... isn't Elite and Strikeforce on good terms with Dream?
Let me throw two names out there: Nick Diaz or Gilbert Melendez?

Gil should have been in from the beginning. Nick Diaz hasn't sucked down to 155 before, but I think he probably would.

Breaking News: ‘JZ' Will Not Replace Aoki Options: Email Article | Printer Friendly Wednesday, April 30, 2008 by Greg Savage (greg@sherdog.com)
Gesias "JZ" Calvancante (Pictures) was contacted by Dream staff early Wednesday and informed of Shinya Aoki (Pictures)'s withdrawal from the May 11 Dream lightweight grand prix semifinals, a source from Calvancante's camp told Sherdog.com Wednesday.
Aoki suffered a facial injury in Tuesday's bout that saw him outpoint Calvancante after two rounds.
Calvancante was approached about replacing the Japanese fighter, but the 24-year-old American Top Team representative could not come to terms with the promotion and has since left Japan. __________________

I forgot Melendez will be fighting Thompson soon. Diaz has a fight coming up as well. I still hope they are able to sign JZ but I really wanted to see Aoki in the next round.
