Immortality was granted to Kalib Starnes at UFC 83, but for all the wrong reasons.

In front of a career-record audience of more than 20,000, Starnes looked more cyclist than fighter, backpedaling against Nate Quarry and doing the equivalent of a day's roadwork on the canvas. The apathy to engage was so severe that the normally stoic Quarry began mocking him in the closing moments, faux-sprinting around the ring and shrugging his shoulders to an inflamed crowd.

(You thought the $44.95 was a sting for that fight? Try a couple of grand for a 10th-row seat.)

In a sport in which self-preservation is understood to mean tapping or ducking, Starnes' performance is likely to earn him the title of MMA's Roberto Duran, a fighter forever reviled for what is perceived to be a gutless display of inaction. Like Duran, it's unlikely he knew how much he was soiling his reputation until it was too late.

The same goes for these other athletes, who for whatever reason -- injury, illness or just plain cage fright -- saw their stock plummet after hollow displays of valor.

In ascending order of audience ipecac:

People need to get off the back of Starnes.
Most of the people yappin are newbs, and "behind the PC" know it alls and tough guys. Critics who have never fought.
The guy brakes his foot, can't take Quarry down and if he slugs with Nate...he would get knocked out. So he backpeddles and tries to connect when Quarry closes the distance.
For the circumstance Starnes found himself in...he did all he could.
Like I have said before...nobody "badmouthed" CroCop when he RAN from Fedor and virtually did exactly what people are crucifying Starnes for.
To be honest...I was more annoyed by the crowd booing than I was by Starnes.
I don't think Starnes should be embarrassed....I think many supposed MMA fans should be.

I must have been watching a different Cro Cop vs. Fedor fight then you. To compare that to what Starnes did is just absurd. Starnes refused to engage with Quarry, while Cro Cop did more damage to Fedor's face then Fedor did to Cro Cop's. Compare Fedor and Quarry's faces at the end of there fights and then try and compare the two fights.

I don't think you should be comparing Cro Cop to Starnes. Thats borderline fighter bashing.

You cant compare the Fedor vs Cro Cop fight to Starnes at all. Starnes refused to engage at all the hole fight. If he was so injured that the only thing he could do was back pedal then he should have not answered the bell for round 2 or 3. But no he chose to waste 10 mins of everyones time. Anything would have been better than what he chose to do.

Sorry but the broken foot this is a total load of horse crap... if his foot was broken he would be limping like the elephant man, and he wouldn't want to step on it at all so he would almost no movment at all... he was quite quick with his "running like a school girl" stratagy... He knew Quarry would knock him out he instead of getting KOed he ran like the bitch he is... stop trying to protect him he ruined his carrer because he was scared

You can add Bo Cantrell's performance against Kimbo...

Slice v Cantrell needs to be on there. Bo gets hit in the shoulder and taps the air as he falls. Duarte v Kerr is unfair to Duarte. Show me anyone that would look good versus a guy on lots of steroids and pain killers. Also the rules of the time favored Kerr. If we had a time machine and sent Fedor back in time I would pick Kerr. Head butts + roids + top level wrestler = scary.

PS Fedor by arm bar but he would take some damage before getting the sub.

His actions outside the ring were more embarrassing that his fight inside.
