I think Serra did the best he could. Unfortunately for him, the best he could do (or almost anyone could do) is not enough when he's up against the best that GSP can do. He put forth a valiant effort and probably went home with some broken ribs, but it just wasn't enough obviously.

Posted by Jackelope ... Obviously you're not much of a BJJ practicioner. Attempting to post the foot on someone's hip and moving to a triangle is considered offense in BJJ. Same as locking down half guard and attempting a sweep. It's the exact same thing as attempting to throw a jab or a straight punch and having them either block it or dodge it. It IS offense. Whether or not it hits is whether or not it's "effective" but regardless, it's offense. I'm just sick of all the idiots acting like Serra was just laying on his back and happy with it. It's the same people who boo during a ground fight. Learn what's going on if you're going to criticize.
Someone in these forums said (before the fight) that they didn't think Serra's JJ was effective for (this level of) MMA. That sounded plausible to me. I don't know enough about JJ to speak to that...can you or anyone here speak to that?

Well I think we learned from the other night's fight that it's a correct assessment. I think most of the problem has to deal with body mechanics, Serra not being flexible enough, and GSP doing all the right things at all the right times.
BJ Penn is similar in stature to Serra, but BJ's jitz works because he's got incredible flexiblility and I'd guess longer legs. GSP was just so strong and he gave Serra no space to work. GSP's guard pass was on target every time because all he had to do was kick his considerably longer legs back and step over Serra's guard hooks. If you ask me Serra should have tried some butterfly guard arm drag sweeps once he realized switching to X guard wouldn't work. (The sweep he was attempting most of the fight) However, I'm not trained near to the level these guys are, and I'd hate to assume they did the wrong things in there.
Serra doesn't have the pedigree of MMA effective BJJ but I would guess that it's mostly because in non-MMA BJJ the goal when in guard is to posture up and try to pass guard so you can land a submission on your opponent. In MMA, at least with this fight, the goal for GSP was to smother Serra and create no space for Serra to grab onto an arm or get a sweep. I think we're seeing an evolution in MMA where standard guard is becoming less effective, and guys who can work from a high guard, body triangle, butterfly guard or rubber guard will start to make some noise.

The fact that GSP was apprehensive to stand with Serra shows the first fight wasn’t a fluke.
but gsp won the brief standup battle. serra didn't land anything standing as well.
thank u
I think you two missed what I was saying...
GSP was showing respect for Serra's standup in the 2nd match. Not who got the better of the exchanges in their 2nd fight.
GSP clearly won... and GSP clearly didn't want to risk getting caught again.

He did mount some offense, but I guess it's hard to see that he was mounting an offense if you're not a BJJ guy.
ya getting back to full guard from half guard is some serious offense.

I use to live by a code that relied on not booing anyfight. until i was in Montreal and saw Kalib....
but I agree 100%, i hate ppl that boo because people are grappling, or think the fight sucks cause its in the clinch. Those are all aspects of a sport, and instead of booing, learn a bit about that part of the game.
