With UFC legends such as Ken Shamrock and David "Tank" Abbott suffering recent knockout losses that bordered on humiliating, it might at first concern you to find that a near 50-year-old Dan "The Beast" Severn (84-15-7) has participated in 10 MMA fights in the past 16 months.

Gotta love The Beast

You have to respect a guy who goes out there simply for the compettition of it. He loves this sport and continues to have some success in it. If more fighters had that attitude in them they would progress so much further.

I appluad Severn in the fact that he still does what he loves to do. But i didnt like that semi-bashed Shammy and Tank. Shammy loses were to Ortiz a great fighter. tank fought Kimbo who is a tough guy with cement blocks for hands, who i think with lotss of BJJ and refining his stand up could be great.

The Ken Shamrock knockout they're referring to is not the Tito one, it's the recent one to Robert Berry.
But yeah I have to give it up to the Beast.

Dan's great. Got to meet him and train w/ him for a cpl hours 9 or 10 yrs ago. Glad he knows what level he is fighting at. He gets to keep competing while he knows he isn't ever fighting for a major title again.

Before MMA, didn't he compete at the same pace in free-style, greco, sambo and everything else possible?
The guy just loves it.

Funny you should post this. I was looking at Severns record a couple days ago and was going to make a Severn appreciation thread.
He is a machine. I don't care what level his opponents are, a lot of his losses are only to "top" fighters any ways. Also, the man has only been TKOed/KOed once in over 100 fights.

Proof that level of opponents can earn you appreciation threads instead of retirement threads.

He is the man no one has had his longevity, gotta give it up. he might not be everybody's favorite, i have much respect for the man and at 49 and still competing he really is The Beast. And what is the deal on his age sherdog says he was born in 1954 and Wikipedia says that same date and then on the same page it says he was born in 1958 if anyone knows for sure not that it really matters He's still kickin ass at 49 or 53 either way amazing

Dan is a really good guy. My Dad and Him were really good friends. I had diner a few times at his house and my Dad took me to UFC 4 just to watch Dan fight from then on I was hooked on MMA. We thought for sure Dan was going to beat Royce but just wasn't to be that night. Dan got caught in a triangle (which no one even knew what that was at the time) and was forced to tap or pass out. Dan was winning to that point but was very tired when he got caught. I really think Dan would have beat Royce in a rematch.
