PRIDE’S FUTURE

Casino entrepreneur Ed Fishman is still in the hunt to purchase the ailing Japanese promotion, either partially or in its entirety. Fishman said he will resume talks with Nobuyuki Sakakibara this Tuesday, against the backdrop of this weekend’s PRIDE 33. Dream Stage Entertainment CEO Sakakibara is believed to be the majority owner of the PRIDE brand and its assets.

“I don’t want this sport to become a monopoly. It will lead to lower paydays for the fighters,” commented Fishman, who identified Zuffa LLC., the promoters of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, as the other main player competing for the purchase of PRIDE at this time. (UFC officials have not publicly verified this claim.)

Fishman adds that if an arrangement can not be reached with Sakakibara, he will seek to start his own MMA promotion and actively pursue the world’s top talent once their contracts allow them.

I wonder if this is just hyperbole, but if not, he's go the money to be a major player in MMA. Is this good for MMA? Would you rather he just bought pride?

That's a hard question to answer. i don't know very much about this guy or his business acumen. I read his last interview and he's very much about the money, which i imagine is no bad thing when it comes to running a successful business. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll be good for the sport, although i hear he has a strong desire to hold inter-promotional events which is a positive. i would hate to see Pride go in the wrong direction.

One thing i agree with is that monopoly is a bad thing. I'd like to see pride stay out of the hands of zuffa. i want to see them succeed in the us and provide strong competition for the ufc. I think that's the best scenario for the fighters and the fans. Is Ed Fishman the right guy to do that, i don't know.

I'm not sure whether this would be good or bad for MMA but with the amount of talent fighting in PRIDE, I would much rather see him bring about more weight (classes similar to that of the UFC) and promote PRIDE further. But who knows, maybe a new organization under Fishman could be a good thing.

I can agree with him on the monopoly of the MMA sport. He may be about the money but so is Dana White and every other business man. I would like him to buy Pride if he is going to keep certain things the way they are and not screw it up. I really would hate it if one day the only main stream MMA company around is UFC, they would probably screw their fighters and fans on a daily basis.

Look what Vince McMahon did with the WWE, he monopolized it and it pretty much sucks ass.

But you can't compare both of them. WWE had a chance to take a rival and make them a threat in a fictional back and forth war, if UFC had Pride it'd just become the big leagues of MMA, so this is more like when the ABA and NBA merged. I'm all for it. It's the next step for MMA to become an recognized sport.

That''s a really good analogy ( ABA/NBA), the NFL/AFL merger would also apply I guess . I'm not sure your right, but it gives me hope at least if this happens. I think the difference being franchises, but I guess you could make the case of Camps( militech/Chute Box etc. ) being like franchises. I still think monopoly's are bad, but it's possible that the camp's could help stop it from being a true monopoly. I'm sure if they did buy Pride another young org. would open and maybe even pull a UFC type rise. You know ,TV show ,young talent, built in fan base type thing. People would watch them grow and become attached. The UFC wouldn't be able to keep everybody, no matter how many show's the ran.

If the guy knows how to run a business, I say sell to him, because he might at least know how to market in the US.

agreed, but I think his best shot is to buy pride and not start another organization and here's my reasoning.... If he starts another promotion, then that just another orgizagtion that takes fighters away from a deeper talent pool they were already in, example: Vera going to EliteXC. I just think it will make it harder for the best fighter to fight the best fighters. It's safer for him to buy pride, because I think he can help it market in the US and keep the deep talent pool it already has and co promote. If he starts another organization, all he is going to have is another organization with one or two top 20 or 10 guys fighting people way below their class or fighting guys out of their weight class. Unless he takes those top 20 or 10 fighters and co promotes them with the big names.
