Refs are required to get the mouth guards back in if the fighters are 10 feet away as they were. Varner was simply making sure the ref knew it was out, as it appeared he didn't.

There is nothing strange or out of the ordinary about it.



Exactly, I know it may seem cheap, but the fighter's safety comes first. I forget which fight it was, but I have seen this happen before where a fighter was able to call a timeout to retain his mouthpiece. Clearly legal.
