Bob Meyrowitz, the founder of the world-famous Ultimate Fighting Championship, is starting a new fight league called YAMMA Pit Fighting (YPF) that will focus on tournament-style events, the organization today announced.

The first event, which airs on pay-per-view, will takes place April 11 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, N.J.

Tournaments require winning fighters to compete at least twice per night. The format was popular in the early days of the UFC but eventually fizzled out due to fighter safety and pressure from state athletic commissions. However, back in November, Strikeforce held the first-ever tournament sanctioned in California and promised future ones in 2008

Tournament idea sounds great, a moving surface sounds way too gimmicy, hope they don't go that way. If they did it would ruin the legitimacy of the promotion, for me anyway.

Interesting. i think fighters are really going to go for this. Because if you win one of these, that's a gold merit on your record. And we know fans will like it.

I wonder if the pay-per-views will be forty bucks because I'm not going to pay that much. I really don't like tournaments that much. Plus paying for UFC events is a lot as is. I don't know I guess it depends on the format and how much it costs. If its a little cheaper I would watch them.

All new fight promos aren't going anywhere near the UFC. we got SOOO MANY NOW

UFC, M1, IFL, EliteXC, Cage Rage etc.

M1 is the only 1 thats going to have a chance at matching the success the UFC has.

btw, the most key part about having a good Promo, is having a BIG name fighter.

UFC had Chuck And Tito that made em BIG.

Pride Had Fedor And Wandy that made em BIG.

M1 has Fedor now that he is MAINSTREAM, so i hope M1 is the new Pride :)

I wanna know what kind of new fight area they are gonna have. Maybe something like the WCL ring which has no cage or ropes. Hell it might be half cage half ring and trap doors.

Maybe they are going to go with one of the orignal Octogon ideas and have the cage surrounded by a moat filled with alligators...
