Even at his best Royce was still just a Jujitsu guy. IMO any well rounded (good ground or stand up,and sub defense) top 10 170 or 185 lb. fighter would beat Royce handily. The rules also are no longer in the favor of a jujitsu guy, as they were in 1993. Royce is a legend and deservedly so, but MMA has moved on.

diego by ground and pound. in royce's day nobody wanted to go to the ground with him......diego would put him on his ass inside the first minute, and hes far too well rounded to get caught in a sub..plus the other points already stated...rounds are short, cant wear a gi, no hair pulling...rules arent tailored to the gracies anymore...if they fought now, it would be over in under 3 minutes, in favor of diego.

Diego could KO Royce on the feet. Sanchez has got some good TK defence. And Royces take downs back in the day werent awesome.

ditto!
He wouldn't last one round with the Nightmare.
It could look alot like Royce v Hughes.
Diego is waaaay to strong/quick/powerful/multi-dimensional and a very very very good grappler.
They only fighter that Royce could compete with nowadays would be a striker w/ little experience on the ground.
Even then, he may get KO'd.

BTW, Royce made $400K fighting Matt hughes. So he wasn't really a "loser" was he??

if your asking the question in their day than ill be the odd one out and say royce. he took care of every body in his way no matter what the style or what their weight. and in his day would mean that he would be waring the gi which had a part in half of his early wins. and it doesnt matter what hughes did to him cause that was 10 yaers later. back in his day hughes wouldnt have beaten him either.

Diego would be the Jesus of MMA if he fought like he does today during Royce's time.
He would kill Royce and all other opposition. He's just a new breed of a fighter. MMA isn't the same anymore.

A fair opinion Junction. But you gotta remember, back then, not much was known about the gracie style. Nowadays, BJJ techniques are part of every MMArtists training program.
There was a big element of surprise then. Not so anymore.
