Found this article on the net, thought some of you guys might like a read. Its nowt new, but the GP is so close, I want all the K-1 I can get, MORE K-1!

K-1 article

A good article, apart from this paragraph.

"Elbows don’t cause knockouts and they prematurely stop fights due to cuts. Clinching stalls the action and is often used as a safety for fighters in danger. These rules make for more action, and quality action, unlike the later rounds of Thai and boxing matches."

Absolutely crazy. Whoever wrote this has, by the sounds of things, never seen a real Muay Thai fight. Elbows don't cause KOs? The Muay Thai clinch is used for resting and is a safe place to be?!

Well I can tell you that 90% of the people I know here in Canada(including people in most of western Canada) know nothing about K-1 and acctually don't know what it is. My gf who my sister got into mma loves K-1 now, she says "I hate that they hold onto each other in mma" and when she watches my Pride dvd's with me she complains about how long it takes for them to break up the clinch lol. If K-1 marketed themselves in North America the UFC would take a serious hit, everyone talks about "who's the UFC's competition" well if K-1 were smart they would be able to easily compete with the UFC and any boxing match. To be completly honest I've seen very few live K-1 events, but since the WGP is so close they are playing a WGP most nights from years past and all I can say is, K-1 should be ruling the world of combat sports, if North American's could watch it lol. (I can't speak for europe since ive never been but please speak if it's the same there)

Also since the American people seem to love the underdog(Randy's so popular) they would love Kloaklai. The little guy Ko'd mighty Mo, beat a couple 6'5+ guys and took Hong man choi(7'2 365lbs) to an extra round decision.

I agree that UFC would take a hit if K-1 was promoted in the US, but I think Boxing would take and even bigger hit. K-1 is great, but I knew nothing of it until watching highlights for CC and the like on the internet, now I love watching K-1, but it would be great to see it on tv and not just older fights on the internet.

The problem with K-1 is the promotion and management of that organization, not that kickboxing doesn't have it's appeal.

K-1's matchmaking, refereeing and scoring all bring the legitimacy of the sport into question and lead to events like the 2002 Grand Prix where arguably the greatest fighter in the history of the league (Hoost) loses to an unskilled behemoth being pushed because he's a TV celebrity (Sapp). And then, the same day that he embarasses the sport by losing to this referee-aided goon he is holding the belt as the world's greatest kickboxer in the world.

Seeing championship level guys like Mighty Mo, Hunt and Sefo getting beat at the lower levels in western boxing and guys like Leko, and Cro-Cop getting KOd by grapplers in MMA also hurts it's credibility.

My hope is that they would realize where the good fighters are and promote K-1 MAX more heavily and expand into the lower weights where the tough Thai fighters are instead of into the 300+ pound range they seem to be looking at now. Guys like Sapp, Choi, Nortje and these other WWE looking freaks just turn me off from the HW division.

Well, as someone who follows MMA, I know enough to keep myself up with UFC / Pride (back in the day), EliteXC, Cage Rage etc. However, to be brutally honest, I'm ashamed to say I don't have a clue what K1 is.

I thought I did, I've seen some (albeit very few) kickboxing fights, and they looked quite entertaining, but when I did get round to watching it properly, it turned out to be K1 Dynamite, featuring Dennis Rodman as DJ, Brock Lesnar dominating someone, some NFL star - this wasn't what I had hoped for

So, what is K1, and why was it involved in that event!?

And, where can I see it regularly? Mastodon, we're in the same neck of the woods, do you watch it on TV, or is it really only on t'internet?

K-1 is the legit sporting side (Kickboxer number 1 as its name means) and no, its not viewable on tv round here, or anywhere in the UK for that matter. I just keep up with it online.

Get yourself over to www.dailymotion.com and look up the names "Peter Aerts" and "Jerome Le Banner", then you will see some fights that really show you what K-1 is about!

Cro Cop getting KO`d had more to do with the ground then it did the kick, he was essentially out on his feet after the elbows. Now as for the ``freaks`` the Japanese fans like that, so thats what they get. I for one love watching when it`s a david vs goliath because before the fight you say ahh he`ll get crushed, and then next thing you know the 5`11 fighter head kicks the 7`2 fighter. Or the 290 lb guy gets Ko`d by the 170lb guy. It`s all their marketing though I do agree, the fact that I`ve just been able to get it on TV now, and you guys in the UK still can`t is really dissapointing.

you should send the writer of that Anderson Silva vs Tony Fryklund. A pretty good standing elbow i must say.

Yep, or the hundreds of elbow KOs that Lumpini, Rajadamnern et all televise. Pretty strong proof of the KO power of elbows. Also destroys the myth this guy touts that the clinch is for "safety", the clinch in Muay Thai is anything but a resting position!

It would be good if the k-1 was more popular over here.
About five years ago, I watched part of a fight on ESPN. I'm not sure if it was just a flook or not.
I like it because I can't stand graphling. I wish they just stood up and finished it that way. I think a strong stand up fighting show such as k-1 will satisfy a lot of people.

Coll article thanks. I like K-1 , just not as much as MMA. Probably because I have always been big ,and prefer to take someone down in a fight.
