Dave Meltzer from WrestlingObserver.com throws out a juicy nugget in the recent print publication of his newsletter:
UFC 80: “Rapid Fire”— not UFC 81 as speculated — could air for FREE on the CBS network rather than pay-per-view (PPV) if a deal can be hammered out in time. It seems that The Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike is beginning to reduce the television landscape “to a barren wasteland of reruns and infomercials.” http://mmamania.com/2007/11/30/ufc-80-rapid-fire-to-air-on-cbs-network-not-ppv/

Good and bad. Good-it airs on "truly free" TV (you still have to pay for cable to get Spike...unless you're like me and someone pays for your cable). Bad-that 10 PM timeslot can be tricky because 10 PM-midnight, depending on your time zone and how your station works, is usually set aside for local news & programs (more the 11 PM hour). But at least airing it that late allows them to be more lenient with what they show because of FCC restrictions.

The WGA have been back at the table in talks with the networks all week and reports so far are that they have a deal in place and are now hammering out the finer details in writing.
The word is that the strike will be over before the holiday season begins.
This along with the fact that the U.S. networks have at least the first 5 episode of most prime time television shows finished and/or in post production (not effected by the strike) means that only an extra week or two or repeats will air this jan/feb.
Thus a deal with the UFC to broadcast PPV's is now out the window....CBS was about to take the risk due to the concern that the Spring 08 schedule would not return. However now with only a two week period to fill the risk is gone and so is the deal.
MMA's (and the ufc's) best bet for primetime network television once again fall to the Mark Burnett reality option...
