According to a UFC official, if Serra is out for a long period of time and Hughes agrees to fight on Dec. 29, the two most likely candidates to for an opponent would be Jon Fitch or Thiago Alves. Josh Koscheck and Diego Sanchez are both coming off losses, and Sanchez has talked about cutting to 155.

it says this down near the bottom of the article.

A Hughes/Fitch fight would be a good match up!! I highly doubt Hughes would take a chance in something happening to his title shot though. Especially since he is sayin he only has 3 or 4 more fights left in him.

Definately true, and a fight with Fitch is taking a chance...I'd be impressed with his character if he did take that fight though!!

i would love to see that fight.. it would be taking a chance for hughes, and a big challenge for fitch. I do see hughes winning a split decision though. Fitch has a great style, but i think that hughes style is incredibly similar.. the difference being the experience that hughes has, and what he's learned through facing higher quality opponents. Fitch will be no pushover, and one judge will somehow obscure the fight to give fitch a 29-28.. but i dont think fitch has what it takes just yet. With another 5 fights against fighters like hughes and gsp.. fitch could gain the recognition and respect reserved for fighters like rampage and gsp

If i'm Matt I wouldn't take the fight he gains nothing by fighting Fitch. You don't get a title shot and pass it up to fight a contenders fight. I think it is kinda BS to even ask him to fight. I do not think there should be an interm title fight either unless 3 or 4 months down the road Serra is still out then you have to move on.

i wouldn't mind seeing fitch or alves vs hughes, or even arlovski vs kongo, i hope hughes has the balls to do this another guy of the name of lidell did this years ago against babalu put his status and everything and won the fight i hope hughes can do this and show everyone that he has the heart still of a champion, if he does even though fitch is one of my favorite fighters i would cheer for hughes for his will to take a chance

Ok so as far as Fitch or Alves being the potential candidate for the fight... I don't see Alves fighting nor wanting to fight in December... he just came off of a TKO win over Lytle... which got awarded the fight of the night, which ironically nobody who ordered pay per view got to see....... I don't think Alves will be in good enough to condition to fight in the next UFC fight Card.... Fitch however definately is a good canidate.... and there had been talks that he would fight next year on the same card that his training buddy Koscheck would be fighting on..... So Fitch definately could be picked... but who will he fight?
I just don't really see Hughes given up his potential title shot up to fight Fitch... He has pretty much nothing to gain from fighting and everything to lose! Matt hughes is a tuff guy.. and he may just fight Fitch anyways if its organized, but I remember Hughes saying that he only has a few fights left in him... I really don't see him fighting Fitch....
And the opponent that fitch was recently offered was Gono, who just got done fighting just like Alves did.... Fitch's camp has already said they would rather fight Karo, but Karo's hand is broken....
So the only opponent that Fitch would actually fight would be GSP or Hughes, and again I just don't see Hughes even accepting the challenge to fight fitch..... these fighters have way too much to lose.. and not a whole lot to gain from this scenario.

Seems like most people think Hughes will not take this fight as he would be chancing a shot at the title. I hope this isn't true and I would question Hughes' character if this was the case.
To those that say you wouldn't take this fight in Hughes' shoes, what if it was for the interim title?

As much as Fitch deserves it, I really would like to see Alves get the shot. I doubt it though, Alves just had a fight and doesnt have a 14 win streak like Fitch
