Former UFC welterweight champion B.J. Penn (11-4-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC), who next fights Joe Stevenson on Jan. 19 for the UFC’s interim lightweight championship, says he wants to fight for another decade — but only at a pace of one or two fights per year.

maybe 3 fights a years is more realistic with more and more event every years and with more and more title contender !!
Well, i am assuming that he will be champ in the LW division !! LOL

Is this really a suprise? Hasnt he already been on that pace for the last few years?
I think this might be because hes too lazy to keep his weight down that much all the time.

yeah, i wish he'd fight more often. He's only has a small # of pro fights. I was hoping w/him back in the ufc that'd he start fighting a few times a year. Personally i'd like him to fight 6 times a year but that's unlikely.

Its unrealistic and unfair to the fans to have their lw champ only fight once per year. I say that two fights should be the minimum, and three to be an option depending on the no1 contender senario. In all fairness, couture only had 24 fights over 10 years, and his 4 fights over 2 years contract was on pace with that. It makes sense if he wants to extend his career that long, but for him to even mention 1 fight per year when he's a projected lw champ is absurd.

I don't see a problem with that. If he is the Champ then he should get time to prep for his fight. with 5 weight divisions each title being defended 2 times a year that’s 10 fights but you know not everyone will only want the two fights so most ppv cards should have title fights on them. Now if he isn't the Champ only fighting 2 times a year might make it hard for him to get a shot at the title. The lines can get long and the more you stand out in the line the quicker you get moved to the front.
I didn't notice the one time a year thing that would not work in any situation other than for him to collect purse money. No champ can only defend one time a year unless hurt. You can't be a contender at 1 fight a year either.

I would rather see him fight 4 times a year for 6 more years.
But like it was said earlier...BJ knows how good he is, and he does what he wants on his own terms

i think he just meant a rough estimate, not realisticly, of corse if he wins the belt he'll go ahead and have more fights.

Sticky I assume you have been kicked off the playground? Or have you just been keeping track of every fight you picked since 60?
