So what do all you think of a possible Fighter's Union? I think something like this would greatly benefit MMA. I would like to see Dan "The Beast" Severn as the Prez, specifically for his excellent mustache. Seriously though, does the sport need a Union??? Let's hear what you all have to say...

this isnt a bad idea. all other pro sports have players associations. why not have one for fighters.

This is the time one could emerge. I don't see active fighters having the drive or time to start one, but retired fighters could do that.
Heck, in the wake of Randy's issues with the UFC, I couldn't think of a more appropriate choice for a person to start/head such an organization.
The only problem I can see is that if fighters salaries are bumped up too much we might be seeing more expensive PPVs.
I'm not upset with what the big name fighters get, but I think the lower level fighters are getting the shaft

exactly rush, i think with the emergence of a company like M-1 (they are doing alot of talking about how much money they are willing to give to their fighters), this could become more of a possibility. alot of the younger, less recognizable fighters that are making their mark in other organizations like elite xc, k-1, etc. would benefit most from a Union. it's worth a thought.

Couture leaving the UFC definitely was a step in giving fighters more power. Eventually down the line we may see this happen.

I don't feel that a fighters union would benefit MMA or the fighters. It may actually make it harder for promoters, such as UFC/M-1/EliteXC to stage events due to the fact that its the sanctioning bodies like the NSAC, ie. government boards, that the union would be dealing with. It should be common knowledge that dealing with any government institution is like beating your damned head against the wall. Read up on the NSAC rules and regulations and you will find that promoters, contrary to popular opinion, have very little control over anything except the contractually obligated pay scale. Fighters may end up making less as they would now have to pay union dues which may create a pension plan that would pay out dick due to the sheer number of MMA fighters. Medical? Promoters are already required to carry medical for fighters on a featured card. What fighters could expect is alot of hearings and beauracratic red-tape. They can also say goodbye to bonuses such as fight/ko/sub of the night. Yes, other major professional sports have unions, but this is apples and oranges as those orgs. are under ONE banner, ei. NFL, NBA, etc. and have a presiding commisioner with extremely minimal government intervention.

Absolutely they should have a union. Everyone major professional sport has one. Right now, NFL players from the 'old days' are having alzheimers and serious mental problems including depression and memory loss due to the repeated blows they took to the head. The NFL isn't paying for their medical expenses and these ppl are dirt poor. Mike Ditka is trying to fight this. So yeah, MMA should have a fighters Union to protect the right of the fighters. After all, if it weren't for them, this sport wouldn't exist. They deserve more appreciation, or at least most of them do.

I think they should have one, but the logistics would be incredibly difficult for the above mentioned reason of no one banner they're all under.
And pres would nearly have to be Don Frye.

I think the promoters have just always been able to convince the top fighters they can get better deals rather than joining up w/ something that would have such a regulated pay structure. W/o the big guys helping the little guys can't get it done. And again having a governing body that controls independent organizations winds up requiring some kind of law drawn up.

boxers don;t have a union but they do have promoters and agents who look out for thier best interest supposedly. Boxers don't specifically join a promoter so they can exclusively fight that promoter's fighters and get paid by the promoter only.
The MMA is being set up like the WWE model with a stable of fighters exclusively working fo this entertainment giant who can then pull the puppet strings however they want.
If they insist on this model then yes, a union would be fine. Someone with a level head and intelligence like Couture would be a good pres.
To legitemize the sport they need to make a US MMA association who can sanction, test, oversee etc the sport from the outside. Then there would be entertianment companies who provide EVENTS and fighters would have promoters or agents of their own who protect their interests. You could then have true rankings, and true world champs.
