I was replying to a post when this came into my head. Why can't we have a fight between Georges St. Pierre, the #1 contender at 170, and one of the most well-rounded fighters in the game, and Anderson Silva, a guy who looks almost untstoppable at 185, and who has not legit contenders lined up.
This could work for various reasons:
1. It won't hurt either fighter. It could be fought at catchweight (175 or 178), so it wouldn't hurt either fighter in their respective divisions. GSP has to wait to fight the winner of Serra/Hughes, and Silva has no contenders lined up at 185.
2. It would be the biggest fight of the year, any year. The UFC has shied away from open-weight matches in the past. The only one I can remember since the early days is the Gracie/Hughes fight that was fought at 175. PPV buys for this event would set a record, guaranteed.
3. Both fighters are up for anything. Either guy would fight anyone, anytime. The UFC should take advantage of that.
4. The winner would be the best, period. Forget about Fedor. The winner would be the undisputed #1 Pound-for-Pound fighter in the world. It would be great for the UFC to have the best fighter, and since they can't get Fedor, they should let a guy already in the UFC prove that he is the best.
5. Rampage needs another guy to help as the face of MMA. I know Rampage is great, but he only fights twice a year. Wouldn't it be great to have another guy help share that "Face of MMA" moniker?

GSP is one of the best ever but going up weight and fighting Silva would be a disaster. I think GSP might fare better than Franklin...but the end result would be the same...a dazed and broken fighter on the mat. I think Hendo needs to drop down and rough Anderson up...I see no other options, besides Filho or Kang coming to the UFC sometime and trying their luck. I think Anderson Silva is just that good. We have seen the "bar" raised several times in the evolution of MMA...Anderson Silva has raised the bar again, and is a level ahead of the rest of the pack....they need to catch up...or get beat up.

GSP has a lot of skill, and he will hold the WW title again, and keep it this time for a while. IMO I don't think he would last very long against Silva.

I don't think Silva could make a catch weight of 175 or 178. If he has fought at a smaller weight before then i stand corrected but he is not a small MW by any means.

GSP is my man, he is able to do anything in an octogon, striking , wrestling, JJ, rap dancing !!
but silva is a guy who hit hard and his knees are dangerous, after ufc 77, i think that many peoples who were still thinking that silva was not for real, have to wake up and look at the fight very closely.
GSP can beat silva, i think he can avoid the knee and striking of silva, but the key to beat him is to control the fight on the ground and specially to try to be on side control to avoid the good guard of silva, if a guy can beat silva, my money is on GSP and maybe Hendo if he drop to the MW.
go GSP !!!

I think Anderson Silva would beat GSP brutally, Anderson seems, to be holding that belt for a long time. No middleweight in the UFC as of right now can match his efficiency. He lands a ridiculous amount of the punches he throws. The guy is a straight up menace.

I think anderson would bust up gsp in the first round kinda like what happened with b.j, but anderson hits a hell of a lot harder and more effecient than penn. I cant see anybody beating anderson in any of the lower or middle weight classes.

I know that a lot of the people who think Silva will win are the only ones posting, but the vote is 8-7 in favor of Silva.
It seems that a lot of people think this would be a good fight. Whatever anyone says, I don't think that Silva will crush GSP. It'll at least be close.
I picked GSP by the way.

gsp is too small for to give anderson a close match. he is a great fighter, but anderson is just too much of a devostating striker and would pick gsp apart. i also believe silva has better JJ than gsp and would be able to subit him or at least be formitable off of his back. know one has truely seen andersons BJJ, but i have and i like what i saw. gsp is a great WW, and if he went up to MW it would be bad for his career. why would e move up if he has so much promise in the WW division. i belive this fight would not be close, even though gsp is a great fighter and competitor, but anderson would beat him as easily as he beat franklin, who would also beat gsp at MW.

GSP is good, but Anderson Silva would destroy him. IMO it would be a very easy win for Silva. GSP got worked on his feet by BJ Penn and Silva is as good as it gets standing up and oh yeah by the way if you take him down he'll tap you. Excellent all around fighter.

I think GSP could beat Silva with ground-and-pound. That's how Franklin should have fought Silva, and I'm almost 100% sure that's how Silva will lose, when he eventually does (barring any "lucky" punch or kick, of course).
I'd probably pick Silva over GSP right now, but it wouldn't be a beat-down like some of you think.

The only way GSP could win is by LnP. Silva is 2 times the striker as GSP and Silva is much better than GSP with BJJ (GSP is a purple belt?). Then there is the reach. Silva is sooo much taller than GSP and has a lot of reach on him.
GSP would be KO'ed...

hmmmmmmmm...soo much taller you say....
Anderson Silva- 5'11 GSP- 5'10
anyway i still think that anderson would beat gsp for the reasons i stated in my last post.
