At least for one night, the tournament format is back in mixed martial arts.
Scott Coker, who promoted numerous tournaments when he helped promote K-1 kickboxing shows, will stage a four-man tournament to determine the No. 1 challenger for the Strikeforce middleweight title on Nov. 16 at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

MMAjunkie.com columnist Sean Salmon today told us that he’ll be competing on the Nov. 16 Strikeforce card and that he’ll be one of the two alternates for the four-man middleweight tournament (see today’s story from Yahoo! Sports). Salmon will face a currently unnamed Japanese fighter at the event, which will be streamed live on MMAjunkie.com partner site Yahoo! Sports. The show takes place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. Unfortunately, Strikeforce middleweight Cung Le is not expected to take part in the tournament and will likely headline the event instead. His opponent hasn’t yet been named.

I say Falaniko Vitale wins it all then, unless the replacement for Joe and the two other guys are any better than Vitale which I don't think will happen.

So you think Vitale will win b/c you dont know anyone else in the tournament? anyway i think Trevor Prangley is rumoured to be fighting. I think he could defintly make it a good few fights, and probably win.

Hmm...the champ Shamrock hasn't agreed to fight the winner of the tourney. Then what the hell are they having the tourney for? This could be a disaster.
Shamrock wants to face Cung Le or Renzo Gracie. Why not add those two guys to the tourney and make it legit? That's what they need to do. I don't care about Joe Riggs or Niko Vitale. They are crap.

This post is a disaster...
A) Shamrock DOES NOT want to face Cung Le, and has in fact called off talks regarding so...
B) Riggs and Vitale are established guys, and a whole lot better than most guys that would appear in a one night tourney. If you havent noticed, people arent exactly falling over themselves to fight twice in one night. (These fighters arent even fighting in the bracket anymore, theyve been replaced by names you have probably even heard even less! How dare them, right?!)
C) You are suggesting that Cung Le and Renzo should enter in a one night tourney... Renzo fights maybe once a year, he's going to go twice in one night, huh? And Le? They are going to put all this build up with him in jeopardy over a tournament with no huge reward for the winner?
No, no, and no.
You are the perfect example of the "guy who thinks they can run a fight org from their couch". Give it up, stop criticizing the organizations that put the shows on. Its getting out of hand, and really causing a lot of long time fans to avoid message boards and other MMA communities that they have been a part of for a long time, and are avoiding so due to idiotic posts like these.
Let the fighters fight, let the promoters promote, and the fans should stick to being fans.
So, in summary: If they are crap, what does that make you?
