Heavyweight contenders Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cheick Kongo will square off Saturday, Dec. 29 at UFC 79 in Las Vegas, Nev. The winner will likely emerge as a frontrunner to become the next challenger to UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture’s throne.

I think Kongo will be destroyed on the ground. He better start training how to sprawl otherwise Big Nog will submitt him easily. Big Nog could take a punch too and he'll have to eat a few in order to get Kongo down but I see Big Nog taking this and then we can look forward to Nog vs. Couture which is a totally different thread.

I still think that its likely that fedor will sign with the ufc by the time randy is ready for another fight. If thats the case then fedor gets priority. So if fedor vs couture happens instead of Nog vs Couture.. who's Nog gonna fight between Kongo and a title shot? Gonzaga maybe?

Kongo was mounted by Cro Cop, messed up on the ground by Marrero, who has since dropped and lost at LHW. I think it's pretty evedent whats gunna happend when the best BJJ at HW with an iron jaw meets a guy with slow hands and no ground game.

i don't know, this can be an interesting fight if nog keeps it standing. he looked really sloppy against herring, and im not buying that he was injured before that fight. if herring can put him on his ass, than kongo can definitely. i think that kongo has been vigorously working on his ground game since merrero, but, in the end if nog takes it to the ground, consider it over. i think this one is going to go to a unanimous descision for nog

I didn't hear nog was injured. I did think he looked good standing with herring. He just ducked into a kick, most people would have been ko'd.

Nog hasnt finished a good fighter in a long time. We'll see if Kongo is the real deal or not. If this fight goes to decision, I think it favors Kongo. Especially with the quick UFC standups.

wow people are giving kongo more credit then i thought they would...
my pick is nog by first round sub.
the only chance of kongo winning is if he trains bjj defense and take down defense non stop until the fight and then i would still pick nog 2nd round sub.

but who knows any more with all the horrible upsets, which i am getting tired of. he still has a punchers chance.

if he does beat nog by some miracle i see couture killing kongo. But couture vs. nog is a very exciting match up.

this is a tough one

the only guy to ever submit Cro cop, who also submitted dan henderson, mark coleman, gary goodrige, bobb sapp, heath herring, semmy schilt

or a guy who was dominated on the ground by carmello marrero and assuerio silva

i guess theres always a punchers chance but at best i see kongo going the distance before losing a unanimous decision

I like this matchup. Kongo is gaining enough confidence and fan appeal that when Nog beats him it will give Nog the title shot he deserves.

As I said before, Nog hasnt finished a quality opponent in a long time. You probably had him early sub against Herring too.
