UFC boss White: Belt wouldn't be on line if Anderson Silva met Georges St-Pierre at 170 |

Following his win over Carlos Condit this past Saturday, UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre questioned whether he needed to gain weight at all to fight middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva.
Silva, he said, fought in PRIDE at 168 pounds and possibly carried the kind of frame suited to weight gains and drops – unlike him.
Silva again expressed his desire to fight St-Pierre following UFC 154. And while UFC President Dana White still hopes to make the match in 2013, one incentive would likely be off the table if Silva dropped to welterweight: GSP's belt.
"Probably not, because I don't know how many times Anderson would actually defend it," White said at the post-event press conference for this past Saturday's pay-per-view event.

Well no shit Dana.
If Anderson won and took the belt it would be an absolute travesty. A huge ass MW winning is kind of what's expected

A catch weight still makes more sense. if he came down to 170 and beat GSP then the whole division is in limbo. The champ lost a fight in his weight class but still keeps the belt. yes he would only come down for this fight so I understand it for not being for the belt since he wouldn't defend but every champ after that would not truly be the champ since they did not fight andy. hence why to me a catch is more reasonable so the division does not have a paper champ unless he plans to defend it.

It is obvious GSP is trying to get every advantage he can. The guy simply does not want to fight Silva. The jump from 170 to 185 is one of the smallest in the UFC.It IS the smallest of the the traditional weight classes. Perhaps he will suck down to 155 and fight the Champ there. I doubt it. He will say he is too big and the 155 Champ should move up. I think if this fight is signed, GSP is going to be seeing his sports psychologist a lot. He has a lot of demons to get rid of.

GSP doesn't want to fight Anderson any more than Anderson wants to fight Jones.
In both cases the bigger fighters are almost certainly going to win so its natural that the smaller fighter will try to get any advantage they can.

Except Jones is the one saying that he won't fight Anderson and Anderson now says he'll take the fight.
So other than being the completely opposite situation, you're right, it's the exact same situation.

Here is the latest quote from Anderson Silva.
Of course, I don't want to be talking, but what if [Jones] accepts the fight with all the money Dana is offering? It would be difficult for me not to take the fight. It's not the money that motivates me. I fight because I like it. So I don't know. I wouldn't want to do it, but if it happens, it would have to be at a catch weight without him putting his belt on the line. I already have my own title, and I don't want to hold a title just to leave it there."
Doesn't sound like he's itching to fight Jones any time soon. He also wants Jones to have to cut weight and come towards him.
Both fighters are trying to diplomatically avoid fights they will likely lose.

So what's Silva's excuse for not wanting to fight Jones then? It's the exact same thing you just said

And Jon Jones' most recent comment....
Meanwhile, Jones, who's been upfront about his own lack of interest in the fight, has recently been making the media rounds in Brazil and it seems as if the elephant-sized, dangling carrot of a monster payday has already started softening his initial hardline stance. "I respect [Silva] a lot," Jones said to Brazilian outlet Correio Braziliense. "As I said several times, I do not want to be the guy who beat Anderson, and do not want to be the guy who lost to him. Anderson is a great champion, I'm a great champion. We both..." At that point Jones trailed off, before picking back up. "I don't know. I don't know. "I'm not saying that the fight will not happen. It can happen. But it's not something I'm chasing. "I don't believe that I need to fight with Anderson to be the best in the world," Jones concluded.

As much as I don't want to see this fight, 178lb Catch weight, would be ideal IMO. Silva drops 7lbs, GSP moves up 8lbs.
