Travis Paulson, a name that may be common place in the MMA community in a couple years, became even more well-known in the wrestling world this evening.

Paulson went on a tear this weekend at the 2010 United States wrestling world team trials by upending 2008 Olympian and Bellator finalist Ben Askren in the challenge tournament semi-finals, then beating his twin brother in the finals to set up a best of three series with U.S. National champion Andrew Howe.

Paulson avenged his U.S. Nationals loss to Howe with back-to-back wins, cementing his place on the United States world team at 74kg.

That just goes to show, no matter how good you are(Askren), you can't compete at the top without dedicating your full time to training for that sport. Didn't Joe Warren lose in wrestling after he started mma?

It could also mean that Paulson is better.

IMHO, both Askren brothers were a bit over-rated in the amateur world...

LOL. Ben Askren lived in the same aprtment complex as some of my teammates. I seen at the Wal-Mart.

Anyhow, I wrestled his brother Max. Got a takedown. Got pinned.

Does this surprise anyone? You can't compete in both sports at the same time. Wrestling fits into MMA as a skill set but they're still separate sports and require 100% of your attention at the highest levels.

You wouldn't expect anyone to play in the NBA and NFL at the same time either.

Primetime did it lol I also think Couture Hendo and Lindland where training for both back in the day. That being said MMA haqs changed since then.

It's two different sports. The argument was made that you couldn't compete at the highest level in two different sports. I gave an example of two athletes that competed at the highest level in two different sports.

Reminds me of the discussion in another thread about whether or not GSP could go to the Olympics.

well first i would like to say that Askren is better at collegiate style than freestyle imo. he likes to scramble and expose his back so his unique style is not so good for freestyle. he was unable to really do anything in the 2008 olympics and really is best suited for NCAA wrestling.

second, the Paulson brothers are beasts and i hope they both get into MMA. i like the fact that as MMA gets popular, more people pay attention to NCAA wrestling since it is almost like a farm system haha.
