Although World Extreme Cagefighting officials have long touted the benefits of having their own lightweight division – the only weight class that overlaps with its sister promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship – a change could be on the way. In a recent interview with USA Today's Sergio Non, UFC president Dana White said the WEC's 155-pound weight class "eventually" will be folded into the bigger promotion. In the interview, in which White explains why the UFC has taken over production/commentating/announcing duties at WEC 48 (he said all Zuffa pay-per-view shows will be handled by the UFC's experienced PPV team), White also addressed the long-discussed 155-pound division. "I actually think it's kind of cool," he said. "I think eventually what we do is, we're going to continue to add to lighter weights, and you'll end up seeing these (WEC) guys go into the UFC, the 155 pounders. As for when it could happen, probably not before WEC ever goes forward with plans to implement a Flyweight division.

It will be good to see some new match ups at lightweight. I'm interested to see where everyone is ranked at after the merge. I know Varner actually fought in the UFC and it didn't work out for him so i would still have to imagine that the competition at lightweight in the UFC is still a little better than the WEC lightweight division. We will see.

This is the end times for the WEC, after this merge they will be left with only 2 solidly established weight classes. I think a 125lbs class will fail, as no one watches/knows the fighters there and will not be willing to risk the PPV $ to watch those they have no clue about. However I think this is the beggining of the UFC gaining a 145lbs class (possibly a 135lbs as well), that weight class is well established with heroes and rivalries! Just too bad they did it after the fall of "Lil' Evil"!

I have hoped for this for a while now. It makes no sense not to. The UFC could have 155 and up and WEC could have 145 and down .Sounds fair. It would be cool to see Henderson and Cerrone battle the big boys. If this does go through Jose Aldo could go up a weight division to 155 and tangle with the UFC LWs....now that would be exciting.

What do you mean it didn't work out for him? He nearly beat Hermes Franca in his debut got caught in an armbar in the third...a few months later Hermes fought for a title. In his next fight he submitted his guy in like 20 seconds.

You kind of answered your own question. "He nearly beat Hermes Franca" which mean he didn't. So as i said before it didn't work out for him.

How did it not work out for him? He was in a #1 contender's match with Hermes Franca. He absolutely dominated Hermes until he got caught.

I think the WEC lightweights will do just fine in the UFC. Strangely enough the two I see encountering the most problems are Henderson and Cerrone. Cerrone because he goes to his back too often and won't get a sub on guys like Griffin, Edgar, Guida, Sanchez or Maynard... and Henderson because he can't strike well enough to hang with the likes of Florian, Edgar, Maynard, Penn, or Sanchez. Mark my words Varner's skillset just fits a little better into the mold of a UFC lightweight who can compete with the rest. Unstoppable wrestling, D1 boxing champion caliber striking. If he only tightens up his conditioning and sub defense more he should do fine. He was beating Cerrone handily until he got injured and was beating Henderson until he got caught in a sub.

I think Cerrone could make the adjustment a little easier than Henderson. But I agree with you, Jackelope. Which is sad because those are two of the guys I really root for to do well.

Someone said Aldo potentially at 155 as well, I don't see Aldo making a move just yet. He's still got some competition at 145. Enough to keep him in that division for a little bit longer. When this eventual merger takes place they will probably want to keep Aldo at 145 as he is a huge draw and they will be losing some pretty big names. Over time he could make the transition. But if you're already merging the LW division of WEC with the LW division of UFC it makes no sense from a business standpoint to move the FW champion (assuming he is so after Sat) into a now saturated division that's going to be cutting several of those fighters anyhow.
