i hope this thread doesnt get locked, only for the fact that it has a poll and i want to see how everyone scored the fight.

People, cast your vote in this thread only. Take all conversations back to the official thread. (to keep it from getting locked, but it probably will anyways)

Basically we saw a kickboxing match with some clinch work
So it can’t be that hard to score
There were no exterior forces working (that we know of)
No Subs, throws, sweeps or great MMA techniques.
It’s a no brainer, count the strikes and the damage.
Most MMA scoring criteria wasn’t explored
So it begs the question what was to be scored. Strikes right?
Glancing over the official UFC rules the article of octagon control seems ambiguous.
Well defence doesn’t score in my book (or any other sport)
Defence merely stops the other guy from scoring
A highly valued tactic to have great defence, sure. But it doesn’t score
(it would be like the Lakers getting points for a good block or a steal)
The fact is you have to turn defence into offence to score

Which brings me back to octagon control
(A rule that seems to have been written while Liddell was champ, for Chuck himself to justify why we gave him so many close decisions)
-His takedown defence warrants effective octagon control and thus dictates the terms of grappling.-
The people who wrote this rule seemed to forget that Greco roman style wrestling or Muay thai clinch work is effectively grappling and a form of octagon control
So unless you have a hold of a guy and are manhandling him, or frustrating your opponent by keeping him at the end of your strikes, you don’t have control.

Machida’s has a very good base that stems from his hips allowing him great torque, And an ability to dodge most punches thrown at him
The answer is simple…attack his base.
In fact shogun did just that finding a home for his leg on Machida’s weakest points
He focused on the hips and made sure he punished Machida just above and below that point, in crippling fashion..
And he kept the game plan while Machida chose not to adapt or change his, except for a couple of ineffective flurries caused by Shoguns frustrating tactic.
The plan was to pepper him then get him down and really exploit an advantage.
The takedown never happened, so shogun capitalized in clinch with some reddening knees to Machida’s other leg
And when shogun had had enough of clinch he dictated a separation with a short elbow and then back into the game plan, being careful not to overextend.

Machida kept waiting for shogun to make an error that never came.
And though he thought that Shogun would be 2 or 3 steps behind it turned out Shogun was a step ahead (but only a step) (Ninja and his corner are to blame for that)
The frustration showed on Machida’s face. But so did the surprise when he was announced champ, as his visibly scarred scowl turned to a smile.

I have followed both Machida and Shoguns careers closely since they began
This was a dream match for me
I watched it in a crowded pub and could not hear the commentary
But I heard those kicks, and shockingly heard Buffer say Lyoto
When I truly believe Machida was beaten at his own game, convincingly, by Shogun.
