2008 Olympic wrestler Ben Askren has decided to take a shot at mixed martial arts and officially joined the American Top Team, as confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Monday.

Askren, who wrestled at 163 pounds while competing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has considered the move to MMA for quite some time now.

Just after returning from China, Askren spoke to MMAWeekly Radio about his pending decision to move into MMA and how working his way up to the top is very important to him.

as a coach ive had the pleasure of seeing askren wrestle here in wisconsin on multiple occasions. the guy does some things that i would never teach my guys to do, but he knows his body and is amazingly strong for someone as thin as he is and impressed the hell out of me. i hope he goes into this nice and slow and learns the ropes before jumping into anything too quickly. bjj will come very naturally to him and im sure we will be hearing about that in the future from the brass at att, and with his reach he should be able to use his striking to set up the TD. im very excited to see a local boy that i had the absolute pleasure of coaching against do well in mma.

Well that's good, because I was watching MMA Live and there was some doubt about him joining the mma ranks.

He's been training with ATT in Columbia MO for a little while now, and has been acting as sort of their wrestling adviser.

He's got a good talent set to build upon. I hope he does well.

If he wrestled at at 163 in the olympics I would think hed want to go down to 155 for mma. At 170 he would have to deal with GSP, KOS, and Alves' improved td defense. At 155 he would be hands down the best wrestler.

I guess im getting ahead of myself though comparing him to UFC fighters.
