 CHOI TO FACE GOODRIDGE ************************ Hong Man Choi will fight MMA veteran Gary Goodridge in the K-1 World Grand Prix Aug. 5 at the Asia World-Expo Arena in Hong Kong, according to the Fighting and Entertainment Group’s K-1 Web site.
The 7-foot-2, 355-pound Choi was denied a license in the state of California a little more than a month ago when he failed pre-fight medicals for his scheduled main event bout with Brock Lesnar at K-1 “Dynamite!! USA” June 2 in Los Angeles.
The California State Athletic Commission did not release the reason behind its refusal to grant Choi a license, though K-1 representatives told the foreign press the week of the “Dynamite!! USA” show that the denial centered on a tumor found during required medical testing. The same representatives indicated to the press that they did not believe the tumor was dangerous and that Choi could have fought.
Choi’s bout with Goodridge will follow traditional K-1 kickboxing rules and will be contested over three three-minute rounds; a two-round extension will be added if necessary. Inquiries have been made to CSAC Executive Director Armando Garcia regarding what impact Choi’s K-1 appearance would have on his future in California.
The K-1 World Grand Prix was moved from its original date (July 29) to Aug. 5 due to conflicts with Upper House elections and Fuji’s television schedule. Other participants scheduled to appear include four-time K-1 Japan Grand Prix champion Musashi and two-time Grand Prix champion Remy Bonjaski.
