The only reason GSP would like to fight without rounds is because it is much safer for him. He wrestlef*cks. This means that in a 5 round fight he has to take his opponent down 5 times. In a bout with no rounds he only has to do it once....just once and then he can hold him down for 25 minutes.

As far as roundless MMA having "failed miserably" as one person said...no it hasn't. What failed? The UFC is still here and bigger than ever. What failed? The UFC's less successful beginnings had nothing to do with it's lack of rounds.

Interesting idea, merits a lively debate. I'm not unopposed to the theory myself.

For the folks claiming that it's within GSP's interest as a control-based grappler, that fewer takedowns are more efficient, there's also a sense of security for the guys on the bottom. They'll often ride out the round a bit because they figure they can make it up later on. Marshal their energy, minimize damage taken, go for some subs, then reset, get with their corner, and focus on sprawl-and-brawl in the new round. The threat of sitting on their back with no bell saves could motivate 'em to scramble more, or to sprawl more, or to be more aggressive with their subs. Succeed or fail, it leads to more excitement, either because the guy on the bottom becomes the aggressor, or because he gets tired and opens himself up to strikes/submission.

Also, it's only been in the latest fight that GSP's had any kind of difficulty in taking a dude down. Not only did he admit that he felt uncharacteristically tired after R3, he still completed half of his attempts while doubling up on significant strikes landed. That's a solid performance by anyone, especially against a talent like Diaz.

If this went into place - and it's just talk at this point, a candid response from one fighter - I wouldn't be surprised with a transition period where some would get LnPed a bit. But they'd either learn or get cut, so that whoever's fighting would have the tools and adjustments to hustle on the bottom. Or, can we hope, go for legit takedowns of their own.

Lets just admit defeat and switch to the jap rules. I loved carding boring fighters (although they unfairly often administered them to Koreans). I also liked the stomps, soccer kicks and most importantly knees to downed opponents. Side control suddenly becomes a game changer where in America it's almost better to be in half guard. Even the four cornered mat is better. When brutal fighters worked someone into a corner it was guaranteed violence.

GSP would bust a nut if he had to go 25 minutes straight
