Had Matt Hughes not woken up by slamming Carlos Newton to the mat at UFC 34, he wouldn't have gone on to become a UFC Hall of Famer.

If I remember correctly, Anderson was Matt's originally-intended opponent when he fought Sakurai. I have no doubt what would've happened a few years ago, but back at 170 would've been interesting.

Hughes made the right choice not to fight Silva. He would of gotten mauled.

we are talking like 11 years ago, not today. Shortly after Hughes/Sakurai, Silva got subbed by Takase and Chonan. Hughes would have owned Anderson at that point in time

Hughes, said he regretted not going up to 185lb after Andy beat Franklin to unify the belts. Which would have been around the time Andy beat up Lutter and Hendo. I think Hughes would have most likely lost but it would have been an interesting matchup for sure.

i think that would have been a great fight then. i probably would have picked hughes to win. i dont silva was as good then as he is now. i think hughes could have taken him down and mauled him on the ground. two different era's.

Hmm....

I'm one of Andy's biggest fans, but even I'm not sure he would have beaten Hughes in his prime.

Matt Hughes had ridiculous wrestling, he was strong like a gorilla (way stronger than a 170lbs man has a right to be), and he had a stellar ground game.

Hughes could takedown just about anyone back then. He had the sickest ground and pound we've ever seen. And his subs and sub defense were great.

It would have been a great fight.

Also, Hughes is being too humble here. I think he was already past his prime when he lost to GSP.

I was referring to grappler's post, but Andy at that time had a much better chance than Andy in 2002

Id give Anderson a much better shot at beating Hughes at 170 in 2001, than i would Hughes beating Anderson at any point past 2005.

Most importantly, Segal had not yet taught Anderson the front kick!
