MINNEAPOLIS – MMAjunkie.com was on scene and reporting live from today's UFC on FX 5 fighter weigh-ins.
The festivities took place at Target Center in Minneapolis, which also hosts Friday's event.
Bart Palaszewski came in a pound heavy on his first attempt and has an hour to lose it. However, according to Thiago Tavares, who didn't officially weigh in, he's no longer fighting at the event because opponent Dennis Hallman was seven pounds too heavy.
Hallman also missed weight for his most recent bout. He weighed 158.5 pounds and was fined, but he ultimately defeated John Makdessi at UFC 140.
UFC on FX 5's main card features Travis Browne (246 pounds) vs. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (266) and Jake Ellenberger (170) vs. Jay Hieron (170) in the co-headliners and airs on FX following prelims on FUEL TV and Facebook.

AWWW MANNN! I was really looking forward to that fight plus I loved the odds on Tavares. never have I heard off a fight being called off because a fighter was too heavy though.

Hallmans out of his mind to fight at 155. Old guys raisin up that way, especially after a career at 170-185 roiding half the time. No offense intended just what I see.

This just came out. Makes it seem it was more 'personal issues' that caused the ultimate demise of this bout.
----- "I'm having some personal issues at home," Hallman said. "I'm not fit to fight. I told Dana [White] what my issues were. He understands family matters, and he was cool with me not fighting."
According to Hallman he passed out earlier today while cutting weight. At that time, he was two pounds over the 156-pound weight limit. He was then given fluids via an intravenous, which bumped him up to seven pounds over the lightweight limit.
When Tavares was notified of this news, he said that if Hallman got down to three pounds over the limit, he would accept the fight at a catchweight. Hallman told MMAFighting.com that he did just that, but according to Hallman, Tavares then asked for him to cut one more pound.
It was at that point that Hallman spoke to White about his personal issues and requested to be removed from the card. He said White was very understanding when he told him about his issues, which he wanted to keep private. --------

I agree. Tavares was hard not to put $ on him. He was -115 on this site but really -240 on the other major betting sites. Gotta change my parlay now.

Unless I'm mistaken, they usually leave the option for the opponent (I know this to be true at the local level).
You can decide whether or not you want to fight a guy that's heavy. Most guys take the fight anyway.
I don't think Tavares turned it down though. It sounds like Dana and him had a conversation and decided to pull the fight. I wonder if Dana is really as understanding as Hallman seems to think.
