Funny they have to remind us that he is no longer De Silva.
The short answer is nicknames in Brazil began when they were a Portuguese colony. Typically, people have three to four names, their given names, their mother's last name, then their father's. Sometimes, a saint's name to bump it up to four. And being such a populated country, it wasn't uncommon for same or similar names to come up. So both for ease and distinction, it became more commonplace to use nicknames. As two MMA examples off the top of my head..
Renan Barao - Renan do Nascimento Mota Pegado
Zuluzinho - Wagner da Conceicao Martins
