18 months ago Jake Shields challenged Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight title, then he left the division. Now after a steroid bust he's considering a return to 170 pounds.

Either way he's going to have to get used to being a mid level fighter. As the saying goes "the sun even shines on a dogs ass somedays". . . Jake you are that dogs ass and the sun was Strikeforce.
His days are numbered in the UFC. H'll either have to take a big pay cut or move on soon!

Could be a future Bellator champ if he can sub Askren.
Shields takes Askren with the only question being Shields' cardio and injury status coming into the fight. Askren's a very good grappler, but he'd concede a decade of experience. Shields loses when he stands too much, and Askren's standup isn't even on the level of Jay Hieron's.
I don't think that's a good move for Bellator. Sure, they'd get the name recognition and a boost in the SoCal market, but they'd be replacing a young, control-based grappler with an oldier and pricier one. Bellator's thing is growing their younger talent by beating older veterans with enough legitimacy to claim experience in other organizations. Shields would cost them a lot (both financially, and in supplanting one of their OGs) in the short term with little long term gain.
If Shields goes anywhere, it'd be to Strikeforce, One FC, or WSoF.

Sheilds belongs at Middleweight imo.

I hope he stays at Middleweight, I like seeing him succeed but I really wish he pulls off a sub one of these days. The only reason I would want to see him at welterweight is for a fight with Demian Maia!

I wonder, if he got popped for roids was he using during the EliteXC and Strikeforce days? He completely dominated legendary Hendo.
Anyway he should stay at MW where there arent a ton of strong wrestlers.

I agree. In the UFC u need to be well rounded to be anywhere near the top and shields ain't nowhere near well rounded. His stand up is almost laughable and his wrestling stinks. The only thing he's good at is his jits.

I have to admit my memory is shit, but I don't remember him ever impressing me with anything but his jits. But like I said I could be mistaking.
Jake is not a super athletic guy. His takedowns are based off of timing, technical ability, and persistence in the clinch than something like the cannonball shot of a Josh Koscheck. His TDD is also not the best ever - it's solid, right, and he knows how to sweep, but he doesn't have this ridiculous Machida sumo / judo base.
That's not fighter bashing - he's just a guy who's generally relied on BJJ technique and heart than wrestling speed or power.

He has effective MMA takedowns for sure, he's just been a raisin in the UFC
