LOL, completely dependent on if we're still talking about MMA. Because you're going to have to learn to punch if you are.

I'm definitely still talking about MMA . I know I'd still have to throw strikes, but I'm more a fan of the likes of Couture, Parisyan, and Fedor. I guess not everyone can be a Liddell or Cro Cop, ya know?

I guess I can use the basketball analogy: to be a good player, you gotta know how to pass, dribble, and shoot (at least)- but that doesn't mean you can't train yourself to be *real* good at one, right? Those are three different skills sets (similiarly to MMA: striking/grappling/cardio?) that some players are naturally more adept at one then the other.

Ok, maybe I should've been more specific- what can a n00b like me do in the Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley area? I saw your post in another thread that you yourself have an academy. Maybe you can point a brutha in the right direction?

i think theres a bjj gym on ventura... near.. corbin i think?? i lived in san fran valley 2 years ago, im goin there tomorrrow so ill tell you exactly

Some good tips for some whos kinda new. I got in my first fight in 1st grade and loved fighting ever since. Just some pointers would be nice. I know alot of stuff.. Just wanna know more. IM a fairly good stand up fighter and good with striking. How can i strike harder... I know to start with the feet and the body and move up like that. Just some tips would be nice

punch with your hips and legs, step in with your jab and throwing your opposite shoulder back when punching adds more snap.

Speaking of striking..

I was watching highlights of the Silva/Franklin match (UFC 64) and something caught my attention: Freakin' A HE'S GOT LONG LEGS~! The way Silva swung his knees to the ribs and how dominant he was in the clinch b/c Franklin could barely connect.

So to bring it back here; what do would the pros recommend for people (like me) who have the reach DIS-advantage? As I had mentioned earlier, I've got a little *weakness* in my striking and partially to blame is my short(er) reach.

I've got short arms as well, so I feel your pain I'm primarily a ground/clinch fighter, but its difficult to create a good opening for a takedown if you don't have hands. The best way to make up for short arms, in my book, is to have fantastic footwork and really work on finding your range. If you can move well on your feet and get just inside your range, it'll at least partially negate the reach factor.

First find a place to train MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai, or Judo. If you can't get that then get a good heavybag and some instructional DVD's.

Punching power doesn't come from your arms it is your hips, plant your feet and use your hips, also relaxation is a good thing.

Remember to keep your chin tucked, hands up, and breath while your fighting.

Good luck on your training bro!

Well if your not willing to join a gym, or take classes, the next best thing I'd recommend is buying some videos. Theres tonsssssss of videos on numerous aspects of fighting.

BTW, do you have a heavy bag, speedbag, or anything like that at your house?

My usualy work out is this. 20 punches 20 sid ups 20 push ups all rapidly done no stoping in between. Thats just a portion I do shadow boxing abd stuff like that and weights.

Judo + Boxing for mma? I'd seriously say no to that and consider BJJ and Muay Thai.

Muay Thai isnt readily available everywhere. Kickboxing is though. BJJ has gottten big and there are a lot of schools now spread everwhere. Taking Judo can't hurt though. Some unorthadox take downs hurt. well the did only the guy you are throwing.

Look man what you got to do get a stronger faster and harder hitting sparring partner and your standup and ground will improve tenfold. Belive me once you really get out classed by someone durring sparring, you start to shadowbox better you start to move faster, hit harder, feel lighter on your feet ect...
