Thiago Alves VS Diego Sanchez likely at UFC 89

While the welterweight division looks towards a championship match in August between current titleholder Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch, the weight class will continue to build towards a new top contender as MMAWeekly.com has learned that American Top Team knockout artist Thiago “Pitbull” Alves is slated to return on Oct. 19 to face former “Ultimate Fighter” winner Diego Sanchez.

The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the fight. There is currently a verbal agreement with actual bout agreements for the contest expected to be signed in the next few days.

Showing a true dedication to making his way to the top of the welterweight division, Alves has never been shy about facing top competition in the division.

Most recently, he finished former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight kingpin Matt Hughes by TKO in the second round of their main event match-up in England at UFC 85. Before that fight, Alves became the first fighter ever to knockout Karo Parisyan, thus solidifying himself as one of the most dangerous fighters at 170 pounds.

WOW this is a great matchup. Both guys coming off impressive victories but Thiago has been more on a roll latey. Diego will pressure Thiago more than Hughes and Karo did because Diego gets in your face right away so if Thiago can't get off early it will be a bad night.

Thiago may have more power but Diego has never been stopped.
Idk who to pick for this one. Im leaning more towards Diego but this is already a candidate for FOTN.

This is a fight that i am really excited about

A real nice test for both fighters and definatly lines up #1 contender status

Ya I like this fight alot alves looked good in his last fights and diego look real good in his last fight it wii be a great match up.

Definitely taking Diego on this one he's got way too much speed and energy I think he will be able to keep him down.

awesome, this fight is infinite times better than the main event, this fight just sealed my 40 bucks.

I really thought Thiago has earned his spot to fight the winner of GSP/Fitch but this is a must see fight. Diego looked improved in his last two fights and I'd like to see how good he stands with a guy like Thiago.

Diego is going to have some difficulty getting him down, similarly to hughes as both dont have the best shoot-in takedowns. Someone like koscheck will do much better against alves, this fight im picking alves.

i need some time to think about this one, i don't know who to take. diego is going to want to take it into the third, thiago has more power, tough fight to pick.

wow to close matchups on this card already..my points are gonna suck!!

I Always bet on him though . I picked hughes (and karo) becuase if they win, they are only winning by decision so its 11 points if i get it right where as thiago can win at any moment.

that is what Iam thinking, I was surprised Thiago did not get the title shot now and I am pissed that BJ is coming up to WW, he should rule the LW for a few more fights before moving up

it doesn't matter how many top 10s he beats seems how he can't make weight for the biggest fight of his life. if he makes weight and wins against diego then he deserves a title shot.

Thank you UFC. This is a great fight. Diego looked good in his last fight, and Alves' stock is high right now. Winner of this is definetley in line for a title shot soon after.

I have been waiting for these two to fight and hopefully they will, I think someone heard me wishing for this on Sherdog. Its a good thing Joe Silva is an avid Sherdog/MMAPlayground poster, or this wouldnt happen! ha

If Luigi can give Diego fits on the feet and even rock him a few times, i am sure Thiago Alves will h ave no problem doing so. all he has to do is keep working on that sprawl and do just like Luigi did only with more vicious stand up. Thiago gets the KO imho.
