This past Saturday at an MMA event in Joliet, Ill., 20-year-old amateur fighter Jeff Dunbar was stuck in a bad way.

In the ninth of 11 scheduled fights at a Dec. 17 Fight Card Entertainment event, fellow fighter Rudy Bahena clung to Dunbar's back, torqued a standing rear-naked choke, and had his opponent desperate enough to try the unthinkable.

Believing to be out of better options, Dunbar dove forward, hoping he could spike Bahena into the canvas. It was an ill-fated decision – one that's now cost Dunbar the use of his limbs and forever changed his life.

Wow that's horrifying. It had to happen at some point, it's an inevitability in any contact sport that people will suffer serious injuries, still it's sad to hear, I feel bad for the guy, can't imagine having something like that happen. This is why there is a rule against spiking people on their heads.

yeah i gotta admit, when reading the spike part, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.
Poor guy, im sure he will be regretting that decision for the rest of his life.

That is terrible. I couldn't help but see this

The trainer, who's operated Chicago's No Comment Martial Arts gym for the past half decade, still struggles to find the words.
in the article and wonder if that was intentional

Ironically, the rule doesn't cover what he did though.

Terrible that this happens...also wnat to say thats why I respect a fighter who lets up on his own when he sees a guy KOed...It would be terrible if the other guy then let go of neck and jumped over and hit him in the face a couple times...

So sad and right at christmas

what makes this story worse is that it was an amateur bout. no need for such a risky move.
