Heres the conservative system I use (and came up with) to gain several advantages in Blackjack. Before you start trying to understand how to count cards though it's essential that you master the basic strategy below, because all the card counting in the world isn't going to save you if you don't know when to hit or stay. There are several different variants for basic strategy but theyre all very similar.

BASIC STRATEGY (H=HIT,S=STAY,D=DBLDWN,X=SPLIT):

DEALER 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A
YOU
4-8 H H H H H H H H H H
9 H D D D D H H H H H
10 D D D D D D D D H H
11 D D D D D D D D D D
12 H H S S S H H H H H
13-16 S S S S S H H H H H
17-20 S S S S S S S S S S

A2-A3 H H H D D H H H H H
A4-A5 H H D D D H H H H H
A6 H D D D D H H H H H
A7 S D D D D S S H H H
A8-A9 S S S S S S S S S S

22-33 X X X X X X - - - -
44 - - - X X - - - - -
55 - - - - - - - - - -
66 X X X X X - - - - -
77 X X X X X X - - - -
88 X X X X X X X X X X
99 X X X X X - X X - -
10-10 - - - - - - - - - -
AA X X X X X X X X X X

Now on the the card counting. I know most of you have probably seen a movie or show that explains a system for counting cards, and it seems easy... but trust me it's not. The system I came up with is incredinly simple, and keeping exact count isn't completely essential, you just need to know around where you are. Basically the thing you need to know to give you advantages is how many tens and aces are going to be coming out, so what I do is count them, and only them. Most shoes have 6 or 8 decks, the chart below is suited for 6. The way to do this is simply to count tens and aces, and keep a general count in your head, at the same time look at the discard pile and estimate how many cards are discarded, the width of your thumb is very close in size to a 52 card deck, so use that in your estimation. The idea is that there is 20 tens/aces in a neutral deck, so if there is less when you look at the discard pile, you know theyre gonna be coming out, and if theres more you know theyre will be less coming out, pretty basic. When there are more face cards coming you can up your bets, safely insure, and alter your basic strategy knowing that a ten or ace will help or hurt you in whatever case. The chart below show the % of a ten or ace to come out, the top part represents "decks of face cards behind" (remember that there are 20 per deck, so if youre 2 decks in and youve counted 20 face cards, youre one behind) vs the amount of decks discarded.

CARD COUNTING (FACE CARDS VS DISCARDED DECKS):

FACE 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5
DECK

0.5 41% 44% 46% 49% 51%
1 41% 44% 47% 50% 52%
1.5 41% 44% 47% 50% 53%
2 42% 45% 48% 51% 54%
2.5 42% 45% 49% 52% 56%
3 42% 46% 50% 54% 58%
3.5 43% 47% 51% 55% 60%
4 43% 48% 53% 58% 63%
4.5 44% 49% 55% 60% 66%
5 45% 51% 58% 64% 71%
5.5 46% 54% 62% 69% 77%

Sorry about the charts being all screwy, it's hard to make tables in here lol... also it's important to note that I do half doubledowns most of the time, remember this is a conservative system... I usually walk in with a hundred and walk out with $150... can't get greedy lol

I prefer Texas Hold'em a game of mostly skill to a game of mostly luck like Blackjack

I once won $3,000 at Pacific Poker(Online Poker) with only $1 SnG(9 players) game....from there i won a $7 seat at an other satillite(like 500 players) and at that table i got top 10 to the $200+$15 Main event where i placed 9th due to a bad beat...(out of 727 players)

I had AK suited with the 2nd shortest stack so i pushed all in and i got called by AQ off...

Flop came.... 10 10 J....7(I really dont remember)....and the river he hit his money card.....K for the straight

so i went out 9th steaming, but at the same time happy that i won 3k...but what really sucks is that 1st place was $44,000

If my hand held up im sure i would of gotten at least 4th place

here is a picture of my winnings...next to my PSP with my babe Rachelle Leah on it ...and i have been making a killing in the last 6 months...$100 here..$200 there..entering $20 tourneys

nothing personal but I just find it incredibly annoying when people bring up hold'em stories, especially when I'm talking about blackjack... I've played hold'em for years too (and stud), but yet it seems like every player seems to think hes some type of pro... and the fact that you called blackjack a game of "luck" as opposed to a poker game really shows youre ignorance!

nothing personal but youre in the wrong thread.. i played heavt handed poker for years, but honestly I coy;d care less for your braggibg... and you calling bj a luck game shows how ignorant you are.....

Call it bragging if you want, but i am proud of what i had done, and it will maybe motivate people to try to learn the game and see how fun it is.... i would of never brought it up if you didnt make a gambling thread....shit,at least i posted in your damn thread as i saw a tumbleweed rolling by and decided to show your thread some love after i saw that nobody had posted in it after you had already bumped it up with a second post of your own.....

and i play alot of cards...Blackjack,7card stud,Hold'em,Razz,Omaha and you cant tell me Blackjack doesnt require the most luck...you cant bluff people out in Bj for starters...you MUST have the best hand or you will lose.....and for the record i said "BlackJack is mostly luck"..not "Blackjack is a luck game"

Hasnt your momma ever told ya "if you aint got anything good to say, dont say it at all"?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a dick, it's just that anytime I talk about gambling there is always someone who comes out and says how good of a hold'em player he is... and in most cases they don't even know how to play another type of poker... it just seems like such a fad to me and it bugs me that everyone thinks theyre gods on the felt when it comes to hold'em...

Any card game requires major luck, but IMHO poker (any variant) is far worse than blackjack when it comes down to luck, especially if you're playing bj with a system...

Absolutely agree, and thats why I can't stand playing Hold'em with people. Everyone and their dads play now and everyone thinks they're masters of the game. I learned to play by watching Poker After Dark while I had a stomach virus and I've lost three games in the last six months. I admit fully that I'm not good at Hold'em, so that shows where all these big shots truely are.

I am a good hold'em player...in order to be a good hold'em player, and be successful with it,you have to play with the best..and not with rookies..its much harder to play poker against rookies than it is to play with people that are knowleged on the sport.(yes..it is a sport)

If you're gonna play poker online dont even think about playing tournaments under $5 buy in because all the rookies, soccer moms, mini van driving dads, grandma's and those kind of people are the ones playing on those tables just to have a good time and play....if you really wanna be successful you gotta play $20 buy-ins or more tables where most people take the game seriously, and dont play like idiots.

Try telling a professional Poker player that IYO poker is more luck than BJ and he will laugh in your face.

and i do play all types of poker and i am pretty good at all of them, but the money is at the Hold'em tourneys no doubt...i believe knowing how to play every type of poker will help you understand hold'em more.

whatever you think is required of more luck....Hold'em is the best game to make money....try making 3k with $1 playing Blackjack

I think you're just not getting it, and you're feeding into the exact sterotype me and Svartom where just mentioning... Why are you udner the impression that I haven't played poker before, or that I'm some sort of rookie? It's because it's the standard "I'm a good poker player" attitude at work... Personally I've won plenty of money playing poker, online and in casinos, I know my odds and strategies to a tee, just as I do on any gambling game I ever play, I won't play unless I've mastered it completely... I like poker actually, it's a great game with alot of chances to win (and lose) money, but like I said it really bugs me how everyone that became a player when it became popular somehow thinks he knows more than me or is some type of expert... and again I'm not trying to be a dick to you in any way...

As far as the luck debate goes, theoretically luck doesnt exist, there are chances and probabilities, and like I mentioned, when playing with a strong system you can know what your chances are... now that doesnt mean I still can't get screwed on my hand even with a good shoe, but the same goes for poker and lets say getting screwed on the river, even if you have a better hand... I understand that theres the whole bluff scenario that provides you with certain advantages when playing against weaker players, but the cards are random none the less, and with blackjack systems you can be succesful because using basic strategy alone gives you somewhere around 52% chances of winning a hand on a neutral shoe... really the only serious game I know of that doest involve any "luck" is chess, another favorite of mine...

im not calling you a rookie at all,and im one of those who hate all those poker noobs that just got into the game and think they are masters of the game...i never said i was a master of the sport,i said "i am good at hold'em"..there is a difference...i got into playing hold'em about 3 years ago when i turned 18...it WAS after the Moneymaker revolution, but at that time i didnt even know who the hell Moneymaker was nor did i know that poker was blowing up because of this.....to tell you the truth, the only reason i started playing poker was because i rented this laptop from this place called "Rent A Center" while my original Laptop was being repaired, and this laptop had a this Party Poker software installed in it and i started playing free games with playmoney, and i fell in love with the game.

"I won't play unless I've mastered it completely"

even veterans of the game like Johnny Chan, and Doyal Brunson say that they are still learning the game,so there is no way you can master it...

Of course nobody is a Master of the game when it still involves a little luck, but for my part i know it is mostly skill because the proof is in the pudding..and that 6K that i showed off is what i have made in the last 8 months that i have been saving...the only reason i have this is because i dont have bills to pay since i still live with my parents..6k in 8 months isnt much anyways..the only reason i have made this much is because i am smart, and i know my limits, and odds...you'll never see me playing on a $100 tourney unless i won that seat with less money...like you said earlier..its not good to be greedy...just nibble away....plus i play ALOT of poker online...thats why im always online and here in the forums..

i never learned how to play chess...i will school you in checkers though

There is always more to learn, but my point is that I wont sit down at a table unless I fully understand all the concepts and strategies involved... In a sence I have "mastered" poker, but I agree there are an infinite amount of strategies that always keep you on your toes... but none the less, before I ever sat down at a table I had no questions and could hang with the best of 'em...

but enough about hold'em, cause I'm pissing myself off now...

HA! I wouldn't do something like that unless the guy started talking crap.

I've run into the same problem with finding grappling partners. I was training with a decent BJJ guy (blue belt under one of the lower tier Gracies), and he used to tap me a good dozen times a day when we'd train. He was real cocky about it too and would call me up out of no where and tell me he'll destroy me and whatnot. I was also training catch wrestling at the same time though, so as I got better at that, I improved my fundimentals and learned a few nasty tricks to use on BJJ guys. One day, he called me out and I tapped him repeatedly with leg locks, and the dude never wanted to train again after that.

I don't get that mind set in anything, be it poker, grappling, etc as, like Trapt said, you don't get better unless you play with guys better than you.

chess = my game

I can go to town on some 10yr olds. They never see the checkmate when I corner his/her king with my bishop and queen . . . . . hahaha.

I've been playing chess for about a year now. I've been intrigued by mentally submitting an opponent using varying strategies and loads of foresight. I am horrible at the chess compared to most, but I am getting better.

Anyone know of a free online chess site? I think it would be cool for some forum members to get together and play chess, blackjack, stud, hold 'em, or whatever.

Somewhat off subject, but does anyone play farkle? Haha, imo, its one of the funnest games to play while drinking with a few bros.

Haha, I'd train with ya Svartorm ;p

One of the guys I roll with is 280+. He's a real bitch to get to the ground, haha. He usually gets the best of me due to his size and strength advantage, but I've had my moments. Gotta keep on keepin on. I've been getting better at managing his size.

Due to his strength [the guy is built like an ox] its damn near impossible for me to sink a submission on him unless I explode with an armbar or guillotine. That's bad sportmanship [and very dangerous] when rolling imo, no need to be an ass.

I agree 100% with Trapt, you gotta keep training with guys who are better than you [or you might appear on a Bullshido.com video] haha

am pretty sure thats false, i think chess started in persian times.. i know in russian chess is called "shakhmat" which derives from the persian word "shah maht" which i believe stands for kill the king, or kings death or some where along those lines..

"En passant" confused the bejesus out of me for a while. I caught on though. I like the reactions I get from people when I take a peon en passant and they don't realize its a legal move ;p I've seen a friend get REALLY angry over this particular move. It makes me feel like an ass using en passant against people who don't usually play or are just starting to play. Regardless, its funny as hell seeing how they contest the move.

I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to castling. Its not like the rules are hard to remember, there are only three. This is another move that has gotten me into a few arguments.

I've heard a couple stories as to where chess originated. The story that sticks out at the moment is that the game originated in an early Chinese Dynasty and bared very little resemblence to modern day chess. They had rivers, walls, and fortresses you had to move your pieces around. If I remember correctly, there were only four types of pieces; I remember very little about the story. Whatever though, someone will wiki it

I heard the same sort of story... But I thought the guy was chinese, and asked for the compounding amounts (of some unit of rice or something like that) for every square on the chess board... 64, I think... But meh...

Back to the matter at hand... I'm interested in reading into your system, Richie, but you should see if you can excel the tables and then add them in like pictures or something, they made me give up... Kinda like having too good a sparring partner I guess...

I'll admit that as soon as they started building poker rooms in the casinos around here (MN casinos are all on Indian Reservations) which was right around the time it was getting really popular, I started leaning towards that as appose to blackjack... I just like the fact that it's someone sitting in front of me taking my money, as appose to working the 51 to 49 odds of blackjack and just dumbing more $$ into the casinos...

I don't play online (poker), I don't understand how you can play poker and not look at the other people you're playing against, it defeats the purpose of the game...

At the same time the limit games at the casino are a tough nut to crack as well... I'm not a rich man, so depending on how much I brought I'll sit down at the 2:4. 3:6, or 2:10 tables, if I didn't come for a tournament... And a lot of that really is based on luck, but if you sit it out and stick to your hand standards (which is hard for me as well because table pos means less in a low limit game) you can usually come out on top... The guys that draw out on you on the riv, are the same ones who mindlessly dump their money in a pot with a pair of 6s...

I agree whole-heartedly...
Blackjack number 1....
Poker... PAH!
(I love poker... But everyone thinks they're king shit at poker... I could go on but i won't...)

I've tried a little bit of card counting... Too lazy to master it... only because I don't live near the casino... Good charts but i don't double eleven vs. dealer ace...

Have you simulated your system on a blckjack program??

I like gambling in general..Wether is Poker,Black Jack, Acey Deucey or Slots.

Even though you cant bluff in BJ its annoying when the dumbass before hits when he should've stayed. When we went out to Atlantic City for my bros bachelor party it was the first time ive ever been to a casino to gamble. He laminated us cards for BJ like Richie has in his post..Basically it helped and the major thing was it kept you with the right Bet etiquett(sp?) so the next guy who lives in the casino doesnt want to bust my skull because i took his card.I learned to double down on 9,10,11 and only split on certain on cards.Im by far a pro but but i enjoy playing any game for money. But i'll def study your chart for the next time i go out.

No to be off subject but does anyone play Acey Deucey..You may call it something different or whatever as we're pretty much hilllbillies here..But the game is where everyone ante's in a certain amount to start and then you go in order flipping two cards for every persons turn and you have can bet whatever amount you want up to the pot limit if the 3rd will be numerically between the 2 cards already flipped...For example if its your turn and you get dealt 2 and 8 you can bet whatever amount up to pot that the next card will be 3,4,5,6,7 if its not you pay into the pot what you bet...and if it would be a 2 or 8 then you pay double.I guess its called Ace Deuce because because you the have most odds if your dealt A 2.Only to way to get beat is if its an ace or a 2 which you way pay double..and if you bet pot which most people do..better hope your wallet is thick.

But i mean you can play this game for dimes and nickels if you wanted..LOL

Yeah i know that... it's also called red dog, my dad calls it "in between" (go figure)... It's a pretty cool game...

I LOVE BACCARAT... it was pretty confusing at first but i picked it up in half an hour... None of my mates have the patience to learn... They think it's "stupid"... I have to play against the machine at my local club by myself...
