Report: Diaz vs. Riggs II is off

Strikeforce’s Aug. 15 event in San Jose, Calif. featuring the biggest fight in female MMA history between Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg was also supposed to be a history-making event in that it was going to feature four title fights.

However, after losing a heavyweight title fight between incumbent Alistair Overeem and challenger Fabricio Werdum due to Overeem re-injuring his hand, it appears that Strikeforce could be on the verge of losing a second title fight.

STORY

damn i was looking forward to Nick disciplining Riggs

honestly, if Diaz had pulled out it sucks more than Riggs pulling out. Im not dying to see Riggs as long as they find a suitable guy for Nick to fight its cool for me.

As of late this is becoming a very disappointing trend. All of the fights that I seem to be excited for are being axed do to injury. I quite possibly may be a jinx.

The 2 best fights are off, I am getting tired of this.

Just a conspiracy theory but do you think Dana has something to do with all the late pull outs from their major competitors? You know payoffs or something(except for barnett of coarse) it sure seems like sabotage.

It's probably just me, I'm very cynical.

Either way this sucks I was looking forward to this card and this is a huge hit for strikeforce.

LOL....I told you I'm real cynical, I hope it's not true competition is good for the sport in general.

SF has now confirmed the fight is off. Afromowitz says they are looking for a replacement to face Diaz but couldn't say whether or not the new fight would be for the title. Ditto for Werdum (to have faced Overeem) with an interim HW Title fight being one outside possibility.

Damn, that sucks. Diaz vs Riggs 2 was looking like it was going to be a great fight. Well, Strikeforce still has awhile until Aug. 15 hopefully they can fix these problems, find replacements for Riggs and Overeem and save this card.

When an MMA fighter commits to a fight, he needs to fight. I think a lot of times--not always--but guys are too worried about possibly loosing, one little thing goes wrong and they pull out. I can see Barnnet not being aloud to fight, but two weeks to recover from drug side effects? I don't know.

I thought the talk all week was Rodger being a late replacement against Fabricio? Diaz just needs to come back to the UFC and why does Dana keep getting brought into this... does everyone think this has something to do with his "changing the face of MMA" annoncement...? LOL

He was in a hospital for it, so I doubt these are your typical run-of-the-mill side effects. Besides, why would an MMA fighter not want to fight? I don't think you give them enough credit by saying that, especially since Riggs has stepped into the cage so many times before. Besides - you don't fight, you don't get paid.

He was in a hospital for it, so I doubt these are your typical run-of-the-mill side effects. Besides, why would an MMA fighter not want to fight? He WAS in the hospital and currently IS in the hospital according to the article I read and WILL BE in the hospital for the next couple weeks.

"According to sources close to the fighter, Riggs will be recovering in the hospital for the next couple of weeks and therefore unable to fight Diaz. At this time it is unclear if Riggs' problem is physical or mental."

When a forum poster commits to posting in a thread, I think a log of times -not always- are not concerned enough that they will lose credibility when they make spelling/grammar mistakes that make their arguments more loose. Some times it results in them not being allowed to post in the forum again. I recommend reading your post aloud before posting

But seriously, these guys' physical health is integral for the longevity of an already short career. To some they may seem like pieces of meat for the grinder, but I think MMA is at the point now where guys need to think about avoiding the Don Frye route to a win. Remember, when they back out of a fight, they don't get paid either.

Yea...yea, but I just think that if the commision says you can fight then you should fight. It should be up to the commision and not the fighter. It just seems like mental BS, which is fine but you should risk a DQ or loss on your record (if the commision thinks you are able to fight). It's serious sh*t to pull out of a big fight. It just seems to happen a little too much, as if it was a smart career choice rather than take a risk.

the commisions job isnt to make fights or make people fight, its to oversee the event so that the proper legal, medical and business codes are being followed. their job is to ok fighters and make it safe and legal, thats it. they have no say in whether a guy has to fight, no one does except the fighter and/or his trainer.

Regarding the comission, is there any evidence to suggest that they were allowing Riggs to fight? The article just says that Riggs has pulled out, but I don't see a statement where the commission did or didn't approve of this. I think if it's bad enough for Riggs to pull out, the commission would not approve of him fighting. I don't think I have ever heard of a fighter saying they are not medically fit to fight in a case where the commission would approve of their medical status. Every instance I can think of is vice versa.

I'm bummed. I was really looking forward to Diaz taking some revenge on Riggs in the ring instead of the hospital.

I guess the next question is who else do they have that could fight Diaz thats a draw?

Diaz vs Lawler 2

Would both be good replacement fights

I've seen multiple articles talking about Hieron as the #1 choice for replacement, being as how Affliction has nixed their "trilogy".

I'll take a Diaz vs. Hieron fight.

He's probably not as big a draw, but i think Paul 'Semtex' Daley Vs Diaz would make for the best fight.
