“Everyone has their own opinion and I really respect that. I am a martial artist, there is a lot of thought and strategy that goes into the way I fight. Give me time and in the future every one will understand my style. It is like jiu-jitsu in the beginning (UFC 1, 2, 3…), it was boring but now it is necessary. If you don’t like it, sorry. I always try to win. For some that is boring, I know, but I am beating the best in the world. After my fights I do not have nothing on my face, no scratches, no bruises. I am like a ghost they can not find me. If that is boring, that is their opinion. But I will be there for long time WINNING. Let everyone underestimate me. I will always be training ready for the next.”

– Undefeated light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida addresses his critics who feel his style is boring in a recent interview with BloodyElbow.com. He has five straight wins inside the Octagon — four of which have gone to decision. He takes on Thiago Silva at UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2? at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31. The winner of that bout will likely earn early title challenger consideration in 2009 along with either Quinton “Rampage” Jackson or Wanderlei Silva. What say you … is the “Dragon” boring or just too good that most casual fans can’t appreciate his elusive style?

I don't agree at all with labeling Machida boring. There is a list of fighters that I think are more boring than Machida out there. I would rather see Machida's "elusive" style than watch a dominant wrestler drop weak punches and maintain a top position while dry humping their opponent.

I love that quote. I love how Machida brings a new mental game to the sport like no one else has. He is a true artist.

Those that find him boring I would argue probably don't have a strong traditional martial arts upbringing. Don't get me wrong- it's not an insult. It just is. You don't have to have a strong traditional upbringing to be tough or to be a fan of MMA. You're just a different kind of fan than someone who does have that upbringing.

If you get deep into the martial arts philosophies (especially Karate) you can see how Machida has truly become a master. His style is like Crane and Snake. The smoke and mirrors style. He reminds me of some character out of a movie. I appreciate the art he brings into the octagon.

ill agree, machida is in no way boring. he is accurate and tactical. but i dont think he is the best. i think he could be the bottom 5 top 10 guys without too much danger though.

no disrespect but I find machida's style boring. he does to much circling away. I understand the whole avoiding damage but fans want to see some action and that never happens because macida is always on the back peddle... thats just my opinion mind you i watch him fight everytime im just not big on his style but he wins so thats all that matters

I ve said this som many time before and i will say it again, he still is propbably the most efficient style. He doesn't get hit, his oppenents get tired from punching air, his footwork is second to none, give him a really aggressive guy and he will finish him. He always walks out of the octogon looking like he did when he stepped in. I ve tried all different type of martial arts and still doing some, my favorute being muay thai, but i have to say that his style is the style of the future. Why get hit if you don't have to?

Oh so I cant have an opinion on a fighter without everyone getting pissy. Machida isnt the only fighter I think is boring.

I mean are we all not different people with different likes and dislikes. Machida just isnt a fighter I like, like how some of you guys hate Lesnar where as I like lesnar.

I like to see both fighters get hit with shots and get in a war.

Oh and im not hiding behind my computer. Haha good one

Machida is in my opinion the best fighter in the LW division. He fights smart, not reckless and is well versed in many disciplines. He uses his bran and physical abilities to dissect an opponent and become victorious. Machida will be the next champ.

Well said! At the time Machida is able to add more combinations to his illusive style instead of just single shots he could be pretty close to Anderson Silva and finishing every opponent. He is coming from a point karate background, so it comes from there..
Anyways he was close finishing some of his opponents, so he' s not just waiting for the judges descision.

Some like the brawlers, some like the martial artists. I'd say good to have them both for a diverse fight sport.

I'm not deleting this thread since there is already a good discussion going, and it focuses on a specific quote instead of the whole article.

I agree with him. People complain in every sport on legal things. Learn to beat the guy and stop complaining. As long as he found a safe effective style, he shouldnt be codemed for it.
Lyoto is bringing in a new level of depth to the UFC that we never have seen and we are lucky he is in the UFC to be molding the new gen fighters to adapt to his style

Machida does deserve some credit for his style but it is lacking action making it boring, and in my opinion Machida isnt even in the top 5 in the LHW division. I believe to be in the top 5 you have to beat someone that is already in the top 5. Which in my opinion he hasnt. Maybe he could given the chance I'll have to wait and see maybe ill have to eat my words.

Great stand up with feints that guys bite on hard. This guy is not boring. Machida will soon rival A Silva as best P4P in the world mark my words. He will dominate the LHW division as soon as Dana give him his title shot. WAR MACHIDA!!!!!!!!!!

Machida is the next best thing in MMA. I think he's very exciting actually. I love the double kicks and counter punching. I like it because its different than what you usually see. And he's effective, thats what the sports about. people don't complain as much about the boring lay and pray fighters (and there's many out there). His style is exciting to casual fans despite what people say. My buddy comes over and watches the events sometimes. He doesn't know alot about it but he enjoys the fights. His favorite fighter is Machida. He likes him for the same reason I do. He's new and different.

He will be the next champion and eventually the next p4p best. Quote me on it!

War machida!

If you think he's boring that's one thing: He throws combos, throws strikes we don't normally see, has great foot and headwork, he embarrasses ppl, strikers cant hit him, wrestlers can't grab him, and he has a ground game. I don't get how that's boring, but whatever.

BUT I hate when ppl say he runs or when they say all he does is backpedal. If you say that you haven't seen him fight. He's constantly cutting angles. He doesn't go backwards he goes to the side. He's def the most technical fighter in mma, but just like boxing the technical guys aren't always the most popular.
