BJ Penn was sentenced yesterday to 1 year probation for charges of assault on a police officer related to an incident in Hawaii 2 years ago. The judge will allow Penn to travel to England in January for UFC 80, so his Lightweight Title fight against Joe Stevenson will not be affected.

so what does this do to his fighting?
i'm not 100% on Zuffa's fight/probation policy

It really doesn't have much if anything to do with Zuffa. Usually when you're on probation (someone correct me if I'm wrong) you have to report or to the authorities (or "check in") every so often and you might have travel restrictions placed on you. If you fail to check in then you're in serious trouble. I guess since Penn was to be travelling outside the US for this fight he had to get the judge's approval first, which he apparently did.

This is an old charge, nothing will come of it. Im sure UFC higher-ups know and could care less. He was expecting probation, so Im sure they were too.

No biggie. He hit the cop without looking -- the cop grabbed him from behind while he was trying to break up a friend's fight. He swung before looking. Its not like he hit the officer on purpose.

EDIT: That being said, I still dont think pro fighters should be messing around with this stuff. But, some are still guys that drink... and that means fighting for no reason sometimes...

Penn must also abstain from alcohol

Right.

Now Sherk can enter the pissing match and say "I don't want to fight BJ since he punches cops." Of course, I hope he doesn't, and this just fades away.

Either way he shouldn't be swinging at whoever grabs him. He hit the cop on purpose, he just didn't know that it was a cop.
