I very rarely see Babalu getting the respect that I think he deserves.
He's arguably one of the best BJJ LHWs in the world.
When you look at his record 5/7 of his losses are to not just good fighters but fighters who rank top 5 in the world. His losses include: Fedor, Dan Henderson, Randleman (not saying he is top 5), and Chuck.
The fact that he submitted Shogun is also overlooked by many.

I easily consider him a top 15 LHW in the world. I think he'd give many top tens problems. I was very upset when UFC let him go.
Is Babalu a decent fighter who crumbles when faced with top competition? Or do you consider him top competition?

I wouldn't say he crumbles against top competiton, but I consider him somewhat along the leagues of Jeremy Horn. They can take out anyone, but put them against the top competition, and they fall shot.I do agree with you though, that Babalu does get overlooked a lot of the time, which I think is probably due in part to his second fight against Liddell. When the masses see you go down like that, they can be pretty unforgiving.

I really don't like Babalu as a person but as a fighter, he is extremely entertaining. I think that he against elite competition but would be considered in the 25 LHW's.

He's a great fighter, and he doesn't crumble when faced with top competition. However, he often makes the mistake of abandoning his strenghts in wrestling and submissions and trying to stand and trade with strikers who are much better. His fights with Chuck are perfect examples. His best chance at winning would be a takedown but he rushed Chuck and trade to stand and trade. We all know how those fights went down.

But he's a great fighter who is extremely entertaining IMO, he just needs to learn to stick with what he's best at because he's better than a lot of guys on the ground, and train his standup so if he does decide to stand and trade he will have a better chance of winning.

Sobral is a great fighter. His main problem is he is a head case. If he could work out his head issues he would be a top 10 LHW. The UFC let him go because he has some issue he needs to work out. Dana said he more than welcome him back once he works those issues out.

Hmmmm....my opinion you ask?
Lol, ya he is top 15 a couple strong wins away from Top Ten. I agree that his main problem is he strays from his strenghts and his gameplan, he is not that much of a headcase, lets get that clear, he just doesn't have as much ring sense as a elite fighter has....like repeatedly throwing knees with his hands down asking to get KO'd....he'll be back in the UFC in probaly 2 years cuz he signed many non-exclusive contracts(HCF, WCO, Strikeforce,Others), I don't think he'll ever crack Top 5, but he will reappear in the Top 10

A no brainer A list fighter. Does not get the respect he deserves. One of the elite fighters in the world. Had a terrible gameplan against Chuck, but is a great fighter. Had he fought his fight, he honestly could have beaten him. Remember the winning streak he was on before that fight. Even the Lambert fight, won the first round. dished out a lot of punishment, and in the 2nd got caught rushing in, it happens. I am not saying he would be favored, but Babalu is good enough to beat anyone in his division. This is one of the best fighters in the world. True.

i dont like what he did but it doesnt take away from the fact that he is a very tough, very talented fighter. hopefully he will keep working with guys like eric paulson and get some good gameplans and stability and fight some top tier competition.
1/11/08 8:53:23AM
i think he's one of the fighters that could beat anybody in his division on any day...if he didnt work against his strenght's.......imo he could submit ANYBODY he has sick subs.....theres no doubt in that, he just needs to use his strenghts a little more.

I think he is a bit under rated...

He is 10 or number 9 in my book, I don't think he will have much of a problem outside the UFC in those other orgs (The best of the div. are in the UFC)

He is going to crush V. Lygar White this weekend

Babalu... better than the rest, just not the best.
1/11/08 10:09:02AM
He's always been one of my fav fighters..and yes I believe he is very under rated... the guy is tough and a great fighter... he can hang wit the best of them when he's up to par in his ability

The Jerome Le Banner of MMA.

Meaning he will always be an elite, yet never King.
1/11/08 11:13:45AM
i think he should still be in the ufc and would be in the top ten

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if he would develop his hands, he'd be a champion... and most likely stay one a long while. Best sub grappling game in MMA at 205, very solid wrestler, has really improved his ground and pound to an excellent level, great kicks, good knees... his hands are his only real weakspot, especially defensively. If he would work on his parries and movement etc., with a boxing coach he would be the man.

Dont really care about the david heath submission so other than that i agree with lots of people saying he has potential to be great, and even lost his LHW belt opportunity because he strayed from his plan and tried to hunt down chuck, and this potential will never win him a UFC belt but he could possibly hit the 7 or 8 spot on the rankings in due time and a few top 10 opponents
1/14/08 6:40:06PM
i like babalu as a fighter and imo i do consider him a top contender .
1/14/08 7:30:08PM
Definately a low top tener...his hands is what kills it for him we all know. His lack of hand skill is why I would question him if he fought Houston, or Wandy...ect. He is probably the best grappler at 205 lbs, I always thought that a fight against Tito Ortiz could settle that debate.
1/14/08 9:30:34PM
The Heath incident will take away from people actually looking at him for his skills IMHO. Other than that I think that he is a pretty good fighter (probably 15+ LHW fighters) and exciting to watch.
1/15/08 7:49:02AM
He is clearly a Top 10 fighter he just hasnt had the oppurtunity to fight the top guys who are ranked that way, imho he would beat - Forrest and Jardine easily, also Lambert (rematch), Tito (f*** me i cant believe they still havnt fought! damn!) and have a good shot at the others!

Someone called him a top 25 LHW???

What 20 fighters prevent him from being a top 20, let alone top 15 ?
1/15/08 4:28:26PM

He's definitely higher up than that, and I want him back in the UFC so he can prove it. Someone commented on Tito earlier, and I'd love to see that fight too. Babalu would be able to take it IMO.
1/15/08 11:08:05PM
After the fight with heath i jumped on the FU babalu train. But now that i've had time time to think about it, it wasnt that bad, didnt hurt heath. i think that UFC shoud bring him back. But where would he fit into a stacked LHW div. Not really any reason to bring him back. With tito, chuck, wandy,Griffin,Shogun,Gardine,Alexander, and theres more where would he fit in.

The guy is a DICK, I hate him. He is an OK fighter, but after his last prelimnary fight in the UFC, when he choked his opeonent even though the referee stopped the fight, I was afraid this would be a good chance for MMA opposers to brag. This guy gives the sport a bad reputation.

Thats my openion, and Im sorry if it offends anyone. Nevertheless, you cant argue about his fighting.
