Whenever there is a highly anticipated fight between two fighters, and one of the fighters have to win one more "lock" in order for the fight to happen, he will lose it, causing the highly anticipated fight to be cancelled.
Examples:
Everyone wanted Overeem vs Fedor, but Fedor lost to Werdum
Marquardt vs A. Silva II was around the corner, but then came Sonnen.
Grispi vs Aldo, Porier ruined Grispi's streak.
Akiyama vs W. Silva, Akiyama losses to Leben (wasn't as big of an underdog as the rest, but still)
Leben vs W. Silva, Leben lost to Stann.
And those are only from 2010.

Future wise. Alvarez will lose to a Bellator can, forcing off his fight against Melendez, and GSP or Silva will lose an easy fight just when Dana seriously considers a fight between them.

Probably the biggest one of all was when Ken Shamrock was supposed to fight Kimbo and he lost a fight to his sparring partner a few hours before the super-fight was going to happen.
