ROUND 1

1. Dos Santos vs. Zhao

Zhao actually has some good traditional karate and TKD kicks, but unlike some of his peers who have transitioned from the traditional striking martial arts, he has terrible boxing abilities. Dos Santos paces himself early on while Zhao attempts to throw some kicks, while also maintaining a heavy respect for JDS' punching power. However, once JDS swoops in for the kill, Zhao is nailed heavily, but like many Asian hw's, manages to stay alive and throw back but eventually hits the mat where JDS pounds him out to a TKO victory. TKO Rd 1 - DOS SANTOS

2.Einemo vs Crocop

Einemo, as an ADCC champ, has extraordinary grappling prowess, but he also likes to stand in the pocket to tee off with his right hook. Unfortunately, he is facing CroCop, who even in his current state, has a ton of power. Einemo attempts to stay in the pocket and he pays for it with a TKO loss in Rd 3 after a fairly boring stalemate. TKO Rd. 3 - CROCOP

3. Velasquez vs. Lindstrom

The sheer overwhelming level of experience here gets the better of the 1-1 Lindstrom, who doesn't have the proper gameplan to take on the former UFC champ. He gets scooped up and placed on his back for a TKO victory in the first round for Velasquez. TKO Rd. 1 - VELASQUEZ

4. Kongo vs Hunt

Kongo has faced some stand up guys in his day, but none (with maybe the exception of Pat Berry) have had the precision and power of Mark Hunt. Kongo has shown to be a tough guy to beat, usually on the receiving end of several takedowns to wear him out leading to an eventual sub or TKO victory. This has been the problem with Hunt in the past as well, but his recent "comeback" is due in large part to the vast improvement in his conditioning and ground game. With Hunt's granite chin and grappling superiority, I think he edges out the upset in an absolute three round barn burner that easily takes best fight of the quarter finals. UD - HUNT

5. Hague vs. Barnett

This is a more difficult match to judge. Tim is def the underdog, but he is also scrappy as hell with superior stand up to Barnett. Barnett comes in cocky and gets ROCKED hard, hitting the mat. Barnett's only hope is his great grappling, to which he uses with great efficiency to go into survival mode, latching on to Hague who attempts to pound him out, but Barnett survives the onslaught. The next two rounds though, are all Barnett who takes the exhausted Hague down with ease, and takes is time with some GnP, coasting to a UD. UD - BARNETT

6. Nakao vs. Emelianenko

The only hope Nakao had in his match was his wrestling, which is inferior to Emelianenko's grappling ability. This is quickly ended in the first round. See Emelianenko's HL reel against Japanese fighters for a visual (i.e. Yuji Nagata) TKO Rd. 1 - EMELIANENKO

7. Avetisyan vs. Overeem

The long layoff, combined with the lack of fights against top 10 competition seals with the deal with the Armenian Russian. Overeem nails Avetisyan with a brutal uppercut to the liver, sending him to the mat for an early TKO victory.

TKO Rd.1 - OVEREEM

QUARTER FINALS

1. DOS SANTOS vs. SCHMIEDEBERG

Bjorn immediately looks for an in for a take down but is stuffed twice. Bjorn then attempts to go for a lock up, which only results in a vicious flurry from Dos Santos, sending the big German hard to the mat in a flash KO. KO Rd. 1 DO SANTOS

2. VELASQUEZ vs. CROCOP

The first round is actually one of pure respect. Velasquez knows what it's like to be taken out by a superior striker now, and gives CroCop his space. CroCop actually lands some beautiful leg chops which obviously effect Velasquez. Cain dishes out a few punching flurries of his own, which rock CroCop initially a couple of times, but the legend manages to stay alive and return fire, giving Cain a few nice welts. The second and third rounds, are all Cain, who bypasses Crocop's respectable take down defense and lands some brutal GnP, but to CroCop's credit, he hangs in, surviving the beatings, however, Velasquez takes the UD. UD - VELASQUEZ

3. HUNT vs. BARNETT

After seeing Hunt's power, and wanting to avoid the problems of his first fight, Barnett immediately shoots in, and after nearly the entire round of jockeying, manages to secure an arm bar. SUB Rd. 1 - BARNETT

4. EMELIANENKO vs. OVEREEM

Overeem is very cocky in this fight, feeding off the buzz of his recent rise in the HW division. However, Overeem's lack of diversity in the MMA striking world comes back to bite him in the ass, as he gets rocked hard in the first round, attempting to survive by clinching with Emelianenko against the cage, where he manages to score a few points with some knees, but the damage goes to Fedor who takes the round. The second, both fights are much more reserved, each taking pot shots at one another. Overeem though, takes the round with more leg kicks. The third round begins off the bat with Fedor coming out with his classic flurry to engage Overeem with a clinch, and a quick sambo take down before Overeem can turn on some muay thai. Overeem, already a bit gassed, hangs on, but right near the end of the round, Fedor locks in a kimura to get the win. SUB Rd. 3 - EMELIANENKO

SEMI-FINALS

DOS SANTOS vs. VELASQUEZ

This fight ends in the first, just as it did in their first fight, but this time, it ends with Dos Santos pushed against the cage wall with Velasquez raining down hell, leading to the ref to stop it near the end of the first. TKO Rd. 1 - VELASQUEZ

BARNETT vs. EMELIANENKO

This is a very lackluster main event. Barnett bum rushes Fedor, and pushes him up against the cage and maintains this strategy for three rounds, scoring only with dirty boxing and knees. Fedor engages with a few elbows, but the stalemate leads to a UD for Barnett. UD - BARNETT

FINALS

BARNETT vs. VELASQUEZ

There's nothing that Barnett has that Velasquez can't counter with, but it's still a very close fight. Both men stay standing for the entire fight, with Velasquez landing some good shots, but Barnett using some good cage leverage for some good dirty boxing. Velasquez though, in the third round manages to trip up Barnett and take him down, using the cage this time to his advantage, to pound out Barnett in the third round. TKO Rd. 3 - VELASQUEZ

Alright, while we wait to finish up the heavyweight tourney, here is a preview of the lhw brackets. This, I think, is going to be a MUCH more interesting tournament, with some lesser known players maybe making it a little further this time.

Also, James Tehuna is spelled James Te Huna for those doing sherdog searches.

I am amazed at the amount of picks for Tom Blackledge, this is by far the weakest divison in the UK and is dominated by Jimmi Manuwa ( 10-0 ) who declined a UFC contract recently
