While I know that most fans have given up the boxing vs. MMA debate, I don’t want to ignore the fact that the two most popular combat sports will be going head to head tomorrow for the first time.

On the boxing side, Roy Jones Jr. (51-4, 38 KO) faces Felix Trinidad (42-2, 35 KO) in a 12-round light heavyweight bout. On the MMA (UFC) side, B.J. Penn (11-4-1) faces Joe Stevenson (28-7) for the Interim UFC lightweight title at UFC 80.

They went head to head December 8, 2007. not both PPV though

Mayweather vs. Hatton on PPV
Huerta vs. Guida on Spike

I don't really count that because, as you said, the TUF event wasn't on PPV. Plus, it was the finale of a show. A reality show. That's like apples and oranges.

I posted a response to your article and so did someone else. Both of us state pretty much the same thing.

Boxing is going to murder us. I think Roy Jones by himself could out buy this UFC card, he even has a decent name and a decent fighter facing him which will be a good fight even though both are past there prime. This is bad for the UFC. This card sucks! The only thing worth watching is BJ vs Joe. They haven't even really hyped that up good enough. Gonzaga is known for his lackluster fights and so is Werdum.

I'm sorry, but Boxing wins this round

This isn't the first time they've had ppv events on the same night.

Not bad but a few issues. The main event between Stevenson and Penn is for the title, not the interm title, Sherk was stripped.

Also this by no means the boxing match of the year and as a boxing fan, like I am sure you are too, you know this to be true. Most fans think both of these fighters have passed their primes and while it may be ok, it is not what is being waited on.

Pacquiao is taking on Marquez

Mayweather could rematch De La Hoya

Mayweather could fight Cotto (would be insanely huge)

Calzaghe and Hopkins

Pavlik could make a splash as well

But like I said overall and interesting take and look at it. I just think boxing has a lot more to look forward to this year then Saturday's fight

This is a bad card to go head to head with a boxing match like that.

Another thing, How is this the biggest boxing fight of the year?

There's NO WAY this even COMES CLOSE!!

There both past there prime and lost there knockout power.

The biggest boxing fight is....

Taylor-Pavlik 2 or Joe Calzaghe- Bernard Hopkins

There bigger fights and there only the fights who are official. You still could see Cotto-Mayweather, Hatton-Maggnilini, Hatton-Pacman(MAYBE), or even Roy Jones-Chad Dawson.

Way bigger fights. This fight does not even come close. This will most likely go the distance. I guarantee it! The only way there is a knockout is if Trinidad comes in horrible. But Trinidad always comes back strong. The only other thing is even thought he comes back strong, he loses to future hall of famers(Hopkins, Winky) I just don't see a knockout. Even thought it should be entertaining as shit!

I disagree. I think that boxing might win this, but I would think that it's because of 1) The lack of truly big names on this card (Liddell, Couture, Ortiz, etc) not the quality and 2) Give me a boring fight that Gonzaga's been in, other than the Jordan fight because I'm not going to get into the whole deal with that. Cro Cop vs. Gonzaga, I'll grant was incredibly boring and lasted to a horribly lackluster decision. . . wait. . . that's not right.

The reason I think that boxing is going to win the "buyrate war" tomorrow is because of the tape-delay and lack of big names. Not because this is a bad card.

jones and trinidad are washed up at this point and are only fighting because of the name factor. both fighters were big when boxing was consentingly popular with the public and they are going to be big draws. i will definitely watch the MMA event myself, but i don't really know what the public will do. i know this PPV airs at 3pm here in NY but it also comes on at night which is when i'll be watching it so its head to head for me. who knows, i guess we'll just see how it all goes down although i agree with natedawg in the fact that this card really hasn't been hyped properly and that may hurt success.

I will tell ya what, Boxing frickin won! And im pissed, Big time.

My pay tv has just announced that due to the boxing, UFC 80 will on monday via delay.

Im pissed, I pay for PPV's for the thrill of a LIVE event, not shit thats already happened.

I am still gonna get it but I have to get out of bed early to watch it before work, Not happy.

Roy better put on a good show.

The place I go, in the past, has played both at the same time. Good exposure for the UFC as far as I'm concerned.

I don't they should compare.. this next UFC fight card though popular among MMA fans isn't really appealing with the general public.. I mean BJ Penn is a great fighter..but not many of the general public know of him.. where as Roy Jones Jr (once considered to be the best lb for lb fighter in his prime) and Trinidad are big name fighters

Jones is my favourite boxer of all time, and I'd really rather see him fight, than BJ or Stevenson, sadly. But any other boxing event I would pick UFC any day. It's just the fact that Roy Jones is fighting in the main event. I probably wont watch either though, because I don't have PPV but I will probably download it or something.

Boxing is live, UFC's event is tape-delayed with many fans not purchasing the event because they already know the results.

Not a good comparison.

Didn't read the article.
